The file is an interesting retake on the myths in question. It is NOT exactly a remake of the original film, but it compares well (and makes a couple of tongue-in-cheek nods to the original. It has Oscar nominated actors in critical supporting roles who carry them off well. It was written well, filmed, and directed well, including some serious eye candy special effects. A solid 3.5 rating.
That said, the 3D was abysmal. See the other versions. It wasn't used in the stupid gimmicky way that many films due, but it also lacks the immersive quality of Avatar. When it was used, it was often ugly or distracting from the action and story. Overall, I felt I should have saved the extra cost for another film and watched it on Ultrascreen or IMAX 2D.
It would have been worth the price just for the eye candy of the world created for the film. But, there is a great deal of substance in the research underlying the film. I was equally amazed at how immersive 3D made the film. This is the first of the new "3D" films that I've seen. I'm glad it was. It is clear why this film has already earned a golden globe nomination. It is the best film I've seen this year.
I found the movie very entertaining. But, I have to agree with other reviewers on a number of issue with the changes between the book and the movie. (Spoilers ahead.) I didn't like the removal of the romantic interest between the Vittoria and Robert. I think they left out the scene of the Camerlengo breaking into the proceedings in the Sistine Chapel without the press behind him was ill-advised as well.
On the other hand, I'm very glad they left out the scene of Robert falling from the helicopter holding a "sheet" to slow his fall. That was a bit absurd. I also found some of the foolish reactions from the clerics in the book ill-conceived as well.
