Tribute paid, but setting a new tone...

The biggest fear in working on a franchise film is to not respect where the film came from and to understand the fan base.
Abrams and the talented team behind this film realized the responsibilities inherent to this task, and they paid tribute to the Star Trek movies and series that came before them, while not being beholden to them. They set a new tone, kicked the graphics into warp speed and really gave this movie a lot of heart.
There were twists, turns and a lot of "in" references which were subtle enough not to be overreaching, but those unfamiliar with Trek can still watch this movie and feel like they're part of the universe.
To Abrams and the talented crew -- thank you, and looking forward to the next!
