This film definitely exceeded my expectations. I was expecting an Avatar-like visual feast with a weak acting, eccentric dialog and a heavy-handed social message grafted on, but TRON: Legacy in no way fell into that trap.
I went with my wife for her birthday, and both of us loved it. I plan to take my sons (8 and 5) to see it later this week.
The plot was immensely better than the original. Complaints about it are greatly exaggerated, especially considering how many plot holes typically exist in movies of this type, and TRON: Legacy had none.
The action, effects, and 3D were mesmerizing but subtle, and in no way distracted from the story. But the best part was the characters played by Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges as Quorra and Flynn respectively. They were subtle, nuanced, dynamic, and full of relatable emotion.
The soundtrack greatly added to the storytelling, drawing me into a fully digital world that requires a significant amount of disbelief suspension to accept.
I've been a Trek fan for most of my adult life and have a deep affection for the original series' and movies. That said, Star Trek is in desperate need of new blood, both in writing, directing style and acting.
I left the theater for the midnight showing of Star Trek knowing as much about this universe of stories as the noob next to me who had never seen any Star Trek, and as a Trek fan, it was worth it. This movie was incredibly enjoyable, full of fantastic action, and the acting was really good. The new actors do a great job of inhabiting the roles of their predecessors while putting new life into them. Loved it!
