Casting, special effects and for the most part the story was good. Kirk's ascension to captain of the Enterprise was completely unrealistic. You can take what you know about Trek lore, wad it up, and throw it in the garbage. So for new fans this movie will be a fresh start and really cool. Old fans may be upset. Personally I would have preferred to have seen a trilogy about Kirks ascension to captain which would have been the highlight of the third movie. But again this is a fresh start. I still loved the movie but mainly just because it was Star Trek and all of my favorite characters are young!!!!
No, I do not recommend this movie.
