This film is a triumph of artistry and art. Superb acting and flawless period settings opens the cloistered world of the Royal Family of England during a time of great peril. And woven into the pain of a man's speech impediment is a wonderful dry sense of humor.
The hardest part of reviewing this movie is determing who the star is.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My opinion of remakes is pretty low. Usually it is the cynical regurgitation of a hit classic as a display case for some new technology. Initially, I felt this way about the Coen Bros.' remake of True Grit. Boy, was I wrong!
About 10 minutes into the movie, I began to realize that the original was all about John Wayne but the new one was all about Reuben "Rooster" Cogburn, a flawed old fat man whose checkered past needed the chance at redemption that a young girl was offering him.
The story line is roughly identical to the original with some bits of dialog lifted right out of the earlier version. While I missed Glenn Campbell's reference to a lodger at the boarding house table as a "squirrel-headed bastard", hearing Rooster's timeless exchange with Lucky Ned Pepper brought applause to the theater.
Matt Damon is excellent as LaBeuf, the Texas Ranger with just a hint of his pride and bluster. Hailee Steinfeld had Mattie down cold and the movie became all about the characters - not the actors. As it should be.
There is violence but not s much as a Larry McMurtry novel. What there was was essential to the story and rang true for the tough, hard world it was set in.
A terrific movie!! Terrific effects, interesting concept (well executed) and the promise of a sequel. Even the love story(ies) are well done and non-cloying. I would buy it as a DVD, too.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The age old story of the powerful exploiting indiginous peoples is told through a alien yet gorgeous setting that resonates both in the mind as well as the heart.
