Liked the movie, liked the action, knew what I was seeing when I went there, but this was a build to a future movie and that's it. I don't think the 3D was worth it, but if you absolutely have to have it then it's there for you. This is a solid action comic book hero movie, but this would be a bad prequel if it wasn't the first in the series. I like Natalie Portman, but the romantic part was weak and unnecessary. Anthony Hopkins rocked as always and he really adds the credibility factor here so score one for the Director to get two Academy Award winners. I think this is a solid movie, especially to spend with your teen / pre teen. Little ones my find it a bit disturbing or scary.
5 stars for what it is, and it is a funny comedy, no academy awards here, but this is a bust a gut adult comedy. If you are easily offended then please don't go see this movie, but if you enjoy funny surprise comedies then you will not be disappointed. My only issue is it is a bit long, 2 hours and 5 minutes, and the relationship between the main character takes too long to get there, but you won't mind much because you will be laughing the entire time, just be sure and empty the bladder and pass on the large soda or else...well you get it.
That's how best I can sum up the differences for those who have seen the original version. I saw it when I was very young, and liked it. Dudley Moore's performance was much stronger and even dramatic at times, but I can't think of any other actor that could have pulled off a remake other than Russell Brand. Other movies I've found him to be the lovable goofball, but as the lead character he did well. Some have complained about the love interest in this version compared to Liza Manelli, well you can't compare the two because this actresses character was much different than Liza, and probably the most different from the original, but I enjoyed her free spirit artistic attitude. I have to say that it was almost hard to understand Nick Nolte, but glad to see him acting, he does look rough though. Now for the roll of Hobson, or however you spell it, Sir Gielgud is hard to beat, and his portrayal and his lines were much more direct than the motherly portrayal that Helen Mirren brought to the character. It was a good remake, but for goodness sake don't make Arthur 2 on the Rocks, ha ha, and I think they dealt with the drinking issue well at the end of this remake that wouldn't have a need for a sequel. Overall, good movie, and worth the price of admission. You do have to follow closely to get the comedy sometimes with the thick accent of Brand, but enjoyable just the same.
This is not a best picture candidate, but it was a fun, twisting turning movie that is just right for your legal drama fix. Short and sweet that is the review. Nothing here I didn't like, other than the under use of a talent like Marisa Tomei.
I'm torn here. I thought it was a very good movie, but it's just one of those that you don't have to see it on the big screen to enjoy it. If you do not see it in theaters then it is a great rental. You have to decide whether or not you like the middle seat in the top row, your popcorn and diet coke, etc., and whether or not this adds to your experience and is an extension of a great movie. You will enjoy this movie, unless you are in need for 3D or something animated.
Would you take this pill? I guess we are all dying from day one, but this pill speeds up the process if you quit taking it. Moral dilemna, greed, money, corruption. Everything you want in a movie. Go see this one, it's worth the cost of admission.
This movie is a "period piece" set in the 80's. It is a lonesome loser movie, and could be a fun rental, but I left early because it was just sad. The guy playing the best bud is pathetic. This is an attempt at SuperBad in a different decade, but didn't live up. SKIP IT.
I think a lot of people who review these movies are just a bit over sensitive and they target movies such as this to take out their issues on hollywood.
This movie was funny, several laugh out loud moments. Leave your maturity as the door and have fun. Don't want to ruin it by mentioning scenes, but anyone this age can relate to the issue here, man or woman.
I guess I am in the minority. This was not his best work. I like Adam Sandler, and own a lot of his movies and have seen his "stinkers" as well lately. I just didn't think this movie was that funny. I can't remember one time that I laughed out loud. The kids were more creepy than funny, rather than adding anything funny. The guy that plays the cousin usually ads a lot of humor and it just felt like they were really stretching it with this role in order to ad in any more laughs and it showed. The movie opened as if it was going to be funny but was ultimately a let down for me. I laugh at just about anything, but this movie didn't work for me.
I always enjoy a good and smart movie that depicts a certain time period. Could not imagine living through the WWII era, and they could have conveyed the urgency of the time a bit better, but this movie was in a word ...Great. It starts off a bit slow, but that gives you a sense of the affliction the main character was feeling. Helena Bonham Carter is known for her strange roles she has had, but she should be in many more movies. She is such a great actress. No she is not my favorite actress, but she is a great one for the diverse roles she has played through the years. I've not seen many movies with Jeffrey Rush, but he is such a versitile actor that he can play most anything. So in review, starts slow, but well worth it and likely a Best Actor, Best Picture here.
