So over the top it's almost bad. Start's out very good showing Krypton. Then I think it loses touch by trying to go off path, not be linear in the middle, and you lose the story. From the time Clark lands on earth to the end it just becomes a visual spectacle of flashbacks that lacks a strong story. Maybe it was trying to channel Inception, but I just didn't get it. It would have been better if linear. Who didn't want to see Ma and Pa Kent find the spaceship? Who doesn't want to see the first time he realizes his strength? All of that was lost... and seemingly replaced by an hour or more long fight, which was incredible, but almost too much.
I walked out of it thinking- "that was just weird." But looking back, the documentary/security camera style was mostly realistic, and unique. I can see the political undertones, but I think its more like Anne Rice said about Interview with a Vampire- "it's not a story about vampires (aliens), it's a story about us." With D9, it's about greed, power, corruption, prejudice, manipulation, and largely, relationships - parent/child via the aliens, wife/husband, the comrade-in-arms to friend transition, and in the end, maybe how the human spirit can win. The best part is it does all that subtly, without shoving it down your throat. You can glaze over from the gore and action... or pay attention and see a lot more. This movie certainly has depth.
Forget the bad reviews of this movie... it’s exactly what it should be... action-packed, special effects insanity… and overly done slow-motion... but hey, it’s a spectacle, and that’s the point. Megan fox said in an ent. weekly interview, "It's not trying to be a Golden Globe-nominated film. It's a bada$$ popcorn summer movie" and that says it. But a little credit is due. In all that exploding, spinning, and screaming is the familiarity of shia & family, bumblebee, tuturro and the army guys, which brings character identification and comic relief. The laughter and applause of the audience in the midst of the excitement made it all the better. A thoroughly entertaining action-packed joyride overall, well worth the time and price of admission.
