I've been a trekkie for most of my life, and I agree with what another review said: It was a little difficult knowing that all things Star Trek previous will happen differently as a result.
Still, it was a great segue way to opening some new adventures for the original crew.
The best word I can think of is that the Star Trek franchise was "mainstreamed" a little bit, but quite frankly, it was necessary. If anything, it made it more human. I like that they had more inter-personal relationships between the crew (the original crew from the 60's, as attached as we all were, were kind of kept in a box, where these characters were more relatable).
