Most movies based on cartoons or video games seem to be an epic fail. This movie delivered about all you'd want if you are the type of viewer that staged epic and fantastic G.I. Joe battles as a child.
G.I. Joe knows what it is: it can't be Mission Impossible (I) with a name as silly as "G.I. Joe". The story is just enough to push the action and characters along. The flash backs are brief and paced nicely to reveal key character's background. Other than the now formulated buffoon humor and cliché romance subplot, it delivered on all cylinders for a child fantasy turned adult nostalgia movie.
While the movie's over all pacing and plot wasn't as good as the first, I was surprised that as a sequel it was still a well written movie. It had some very funny moments, though one or maybe two was in a "grey" area for kids I thought.
I laughed out loud a few times, and took a date to it-- no kids to use as an excuse. We both enjoyed it.
I haven't read the GN, but I did have some clue was to what it was going to be about. And from what I'm seeing in the reviews on here-- many are still clueless. The movie isn't a superhero movie: it's a satrical drama w/ superheroes in it.
The end was great-- I loved the message. The characters were deep, and I didn't have a problem getting into the main ones. Even the photography was more Robert Dinero's "Taxi Driver" than a modern action film.
Actually, this movie has more in common w/ "Taxi Driver", "Clockwork Orange", "Bladerunner", and other social commentaries than it does w/ X-men.
If you know what you are getting, it delivers it well.
