Potiche is a throwback to movies of the "70's in which a taken for granted wife comes into her own when her self-centered, misogynistic husband gets sick. De Neuve's character provided the dowry for her husband, a prosperous umbrella factory. He has taken this paternalistically run factory and turned into his private Libya. Meanwhile, his wife has nothing more to do than commune with birds and deer and write down daily verse. Once she takes over the plant durng her husband's illness, she reinstates the old-fashioned values of her father and all is well. This could not be accomplished without the help of her former lover Gerard DePardieu. One of the joys of the film is watching the two work and dance together, delightful scenes. While this is in no way an Important Film, it is defintely an delightful way to spend an evening.
