As a fan of the original theatrical Batman with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson as the Joker, I'd yet to see a replacement for the original. Though I thoroughly enjoyed Batman Begins, it was my second favorite Batman till now. Bale/Ledger has surpassed all past Batman movies with Dark Knight.
This is a must see, best movie of the summer. It portrayed a perfect Batman, Dark Knight. And the Joker as a man just wanting to "watch the world burn" was a scene stealer.

About what I expected

I wouldn't rate this as the winner of the summer movie race this year, but it delivered on everything I expected. Hellboy's unique superhero genre, action, and a few laughs thrown in. I was a little disappointed to not see more "Pan's Labyrinth" special effects, but overall a good movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
