The Grey is Brutal!!

"The Grey" is brutal!! Imagine if you will, you are part of an Alaskan Pipeline Crew. It's finally time to go home. You and your unruly co-workers are enroute home via a 727 jet in a nasty snow storm, when out of no where suddenly your plane is in distress and crashes. You are thrown from the wreckage. Once you figure out where you are, you and the other survivors then find out you are in the Alaskan Wilderness in some really brutal weather and the wolves see you as the intruder. The story unfolds from there...
I love Liam Nesson, truly I do, but I did not like "The Grey". The movie does contain some action and is very violent, brutal, bloody, intense, mildly suspenseful, but very efficient in telling the story. At times the story moved a bit too slow for me.
Liam Neeson is excellent in his portrayal of "Ottway". Please make no mistake the movie is very well done. I just did not like the subject matter. If you are a Liam Neeson fan and can stand the brutality of "The Grey" then this is your movie.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is not about 911, although the horrific event is the back drop. The movie is based on the novel by author Johnathan Safran Foer.
Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) lost his Dad Thomas Schell (Tom Hanks) in the 911 attack on the World Trade Center. In the coming days after his Dad's funeral Oskar is rummaging through his Dad's closet and he accidently knocks over a vase, it breaks and amongst the broken ceramic pieces is an envelope that contains a key. Oskar believes that this key will open a lock some where in the city to reveal a final message from his Dad. He goes out in search of the lock. The story unfolds from there...
Thomas Horn is a very good little actor. The story is very emotional, intense and at times moves at a snails pace. The story seems to skip around a bit leaving you wondering about certain scenes. The best part is the last 35 minutes.
If you can stand the mentioning of 911 then see "Exremely Loud and Incredibly Close".
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Haywire

"Haywire" "is a Fast-Paced, In Your Face, Action Thriller". The only real complaints I have is the movie wasn't long enough and the dialog wasn't as strong as you would expect given the strong cast. Also I think Angelina Jolie would have made a better female lead.
Gina Carano plays Mallory Kane who is a highly trained Black Ops agent for a government security contractor. Her missions take her to some of the most dangerous parts of the world. After Mallory successfully rescues a hostage journalist, she is betrayed by the very people she works for. Once Mallory determines exactly what is happening she will stop at nothing to get at the truth and find out who is exactly responsible. The story unfolds from there...
There are many serious fight scenes and some crazy stunts. You have to pay attention because the story is told in flashback fashion. If you like high-impact action thrillers "Haywire" is your movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Red Tails

"Red Tails" is about the experimental program that was started during World War II at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Thirteen Black Cadets were selected to be part of the Civil Aeronautics Authority. The progam's mission was to train men of color to become fighter pilots for the United States Army.
"Red Tails" is very entertaining with really cool aerial dynamics, cool looking combat and wild battle scenes, but its very sanitized. The pace of the movie is off. There are a lot of holes that aren't filled. The dialogue was campy. Going to war cannot be as fun as it looked in "Red Tails".
There is some beautiful cinematography of 1944 Italy. The movie is worth seeing just for the entertainment aspect. You will probably learn something new that you did not know about the Tuskegee Airmen, but the history lesson that is provided is limited.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Iron Lady

"The Iron Lady" is an intimate portait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep). Margaret Thatcher through a lot of hard work became the first female Prime Minister of Great Britain. She was also one of the 20th Century's most influential woman. Margaret came from humble beginnings to break down gender barriers in an otherwise male dominated world.
The best thing about "The Iron Lady" is Meryl Streep's brilliant portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. The movie is steep in flashbacks. You really have to pay attention and at times I felt a bit lost. There are many important times during Thatcher's reign as Prime Minister that are glossed over in the movie. This only leads to more questions. You never really get a clear current picture about her family.
A large section of the movie is about the Falklands War, which during that time Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister. All in all Meryl Streep is masterful in "The Iron Lady". If you are a Meryl Streep fan then by all means you should see "The Iron Lady".
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Contraband

Mark Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday who once was a smuggler. He gave up the smuggling business for a more stable and safe life for his wife and young boys. However, his brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) gets into trouble after a deal he was responsible for goes awry. To bail Andy out Chris is forced back into the Smuggling business. Chris depends on his best friend Sebastian Abney (Ben Foster) to watch his family while he makes a run to Panama, but the best laid plans don't always go as planned. The story unfolds from there...
"Contraband" is a clear case of you do not know who you can trust. The movie has plenty of action, intrigue and nail-biting suspense. Mark Wahlberg is the "Action Movie King". He does a good job of pulling off his character. There's also some nice views of New Orleans, Lousiana.
If you like Action Thrillers and you like Mark Wahlberg, then "Contraband" is your movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Joyful Noise

The best thing about "Joyful Noise" is Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton and Keke Palmer. They have good on-screen chemistry. The music is really good and the songs were performed really well. "Joyful Noise" is a feel-good movie, but lacks the comedy that the previews promised.
A small rural town in Georgia called "Pacashau" falls on hard times. Businesses have gone under, store fronts are closed and "For Sale" signs are rampant.
There is one bright spot in "Pacashau", it's their Divinity Church Choir. This choir enters a national competition each year to only make it as far as the regionals. The Choir can really sing, but needs to do something different to beat their competition this year.
The story unfolds from there...
The musical part of the movie is definitely entertaining. But parts of the plot are weak, the jokes are dry and not all of the cast members have good on-screen chemistry that is needed in a movie like this.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is based on the British Spy novel by John Le Carre.
In England during the 1970's, the MI6 sends a spy (Mark Strong) to meet with a Hungarian general who knows the identity of a Soviet Spy within the organization's top ranks.
Unfortunately the mission goes awry and the general dies before he can reveal any information.
Veteran agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) has been called back from forced retirement to hunt down the mole in the "Circus", the highest echelon of the Secret Intelligence Service and stop the leak of British Intelligence to the Russians.
The story unfolds from there.
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is "Dark, Intriguing and Suspenseful". All of the elements that makeup a good spy flick are there, "Murder, Sex, Adultry, Lies, Secrecy and a large amount of Blood"
The movie starts off a bit slow, but picks up steam, you have to pay attention since the movie contains many flashbacks. These pieces are needed to put it all together.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Dark IntenseThriller!!

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is the first in a trilogy based on the Stieg Larsson literary blockbuster "The Millennium".
To say that "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is a Dark Thriller would be putting it mildly.
A journalist (Daniel Craig) who's on his last leg and a computer hacker (Rooney Mara) unravel a horrible family mystery that spans over 40 years. The two investigate the disappearance of a woman believed to have been murdered along with several other woman. The story unfolds from there...
The movie is "Intense, Dark, Graphic, Suspenseful, Intriguing and also rather long", but to make certain points, the movie had to run it's course. Issues like Family Skeletons, Power, Corporate Corruption, Greed and Violent Sexual situations are all played out in earnest. If you like your Thrillers "Dark and Intense", I would say this is your movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Good 2nd Installment!!

I actually enjoyed this second installment of Sherlock Holmes more then the 2009 installment.
Austria's crown prince is found dead, the evidence seems to indicate that the prince committed suicide, but when Sherlock Holmes is brought in on the case, murder seems a bit more fitting. There is an evil genius named Moriarty who is a part of the puzzle that Holmes and Dr. Watson are trying to solve. In comes a Gypsy (Noomi Rapace) whose life was saved by Holmes, they all chase Moriarty across Europe trying to thwart his latest plot before it comes to fruition. The story unfolds from there...
Lots of edge of your seat action, special effects and intrigue. There are many twists and turns. You will think you have it figured out and then comes another twist to keep you guessing.
The paid critics were a bit luke warm regarding "Sherlock Holmes" A Game of Shadows", I happen to think it's pretty good. I was able to follow it better then the first installment. As franchises go, it delivers.
I think "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" is worth the price of admission
Yes, I recommend this movie.
