"Whip It" is surprisingly good! It has lots of "Girl Power" without being an over kill, it's funny and sweet without trying to hard. Whip It" is about a girl named Bliss(Ellen Page) who lives in a small town in Texas, she is tired of living in her mother's 1950's world of beauty pageants and debutante balls. Bliss sees a way out when she happens to attend a Woman's Roller Derby event. She tries out for the Roller Derby and potential is seen by the team. She signs up and has to hide the fact that she is on the team from her parents. The story unfolds from there...
I would be lying if I say that "The Invention of Lying" was any good. This was one of the strangest movies I have ever seen. I am extremely disappointed with how this movie was made. It appeared to be really low budget. It wasn't obvious what state, city or even country the movie was based in. "The Invention of Lying" is about a man named Mark (Ricky Gervais) who lives in a world where everyone tells the whole truth at all times and in most cases is extremely blunt, telling a lie is totally out of the question. After losing his job, Mark stumbles upon the concept of lying.
Fame(2009)" is a mild reboot of the successful 1980's television show that started Debbie Allen. The actors are extremely talented. The music was great and the dancing off the hook. I don't feel that the acting abilities of the young actors was really tested. There were so many stories on-going in the movie that there wasn't enough time for each story to unfold and then see the conclusion. You are left to wonder what might be or in some cases what might have been. The movie did not live up to the Trailers.
I was so excited about this movie based on the previews I saw. I expected a lot more then I got. Eighty Nine minutes is not long enough to tell the story that was being portrayed. The Artifical Intelligence is really good, there is even a serious car chase/crash that kept me on the edge of my seat for a few seconds, but that is where the excitement ends. Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell play FBI Agents who are investigating a mysterious murder of a college student. This college student's father is the inventor of the High-Tech "Surrogates". The Surrogate business allows a person to purchase a flawless version of themselves.
"Love Happens" is about a therapist named Dr. Burke Ryan (Eckhart) who gets his patients to openly confront their pain, but he secretly does not take his own advice. Jennifer Aniston plays a Seattle Flower shop owner named Eloise who meets Dr. Ryan, likes him and tries to help him. There is absolutely no on-screen chemistry between Eckhart and Aniston. Some of the scenes are at times ackward and disjointed. There is pain, sadness and at times real joy in the movie, but mostly the movie drags. I was expecting a real romance between Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart, all I got was a mild flirtation. "Love Happens" isn't bad, it just isn't as good as it should be.
"The Informant!" is a story about an Ivy League PhD Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon) who was a rising star at a company called Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). Mark Whitacre blew the whistle on a pricing fixing scheme that the company was involved in back in the early 1990's. The usual back stabbing, finger pointing and denials ran amok amongst the other ADM Executives. Matt Damon was brillant and very convincing in his role as a bipolar Mark Whitacre. "The Informant!" is an interesting expose about Corporate Corruption at it's finest. The movie is very entertaining and even funny at times, but there are some slow spots that drag.
Awesome R&B and Gospel music make "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" extremely enjoyable. Grammy award winning R&B artists Mary J. Blige and Gladys Knight not only act in the movie but each sings bringing down the house each time. Taraji P. Henson will surprise you because she can also sing and does during the first 10 minutes of the movie. When pistol-packing grandma"Madea" catches several youth breaking into her home, she takes matters into her own hands by delivering the youth to what ultimately will become their only living relative. The story unfolds from there...Marvin Winans turns in a great Gospel performance also.
"All About Steve" was awful. I am very disappointed. I am not sure what Sandra Bullock was thinking when she decided to make this movie. The best part of the movie is the last 15 minutes. While I usually complain about a movie lasting only 90 minutes, I could not wait for "All About Steve" to be over.Sandra Bullock plays "Mary" a quirky romantically obsessed crossword puzzle creator for a Sacramento newspaper. She meets the guy of her dreams in the form of a blind date that was set up by her parents (whom by the way she lives with) Mary becomes obsessed with the blind date and literally chases him all over the country.
This is Quentin Tarantino at his best! The movie has lots of intrigue, suspense and at times bloody action. The movie shows no restraints and is very entertaining.
Imagine this if you can, an alien spacecraft hovers over Johannesburg South Africa. The people of Johannesburg just watch the ship for an undisclosed amount of time. Finally the military and various other South African agencies decide to investigate and make contact with the ship. They soon find that there are hundreds of mal-nourished aliens aboard the ship. The african people want to help the aliens, an agency is formed and all of the aliens are removed from the ship. They are brought to an abandoned area that becomes a refugee camp called "D9". Soon things get out of hand and the african people want the aliens to leave. The story unfolds from there...The movie comes across documentary style. The story is edgy and provocative.
