"Going The Distance" is about two lovers Erin (Barrymore) and Garrett (Long) who try to make a relationship work once Erin moves back to the west coast to finish her journalism degree. Garrett remains in New York working at a record label. Using Webcam, Laptops, telephones and the occasional coast to coast flight, Erin and Garrett keep their relationship going until a job offer changes one of their lives. The story unfolds from there... "Going The Distance" is a typical Romantic Comedy although it was riddled with obscenities throughout the dialog. This movie is definitely not for anyone under 17 years of age. Although realistic and funny at times, I found "Going The Distance" a bit dry. There was something lacking with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. Their on-screen chemistry was non-existent. Since these two have an on again/off again relationship in real life, I expected more.
"Machete" is Fresh, Gory, Entertaining, at times Funny and Contains "Over the Top" Violence. A Mexican Federale known as "Machete" (Danny Trejo) is almost killed by a Powerful Drug Lord (Steven Seagal) and observes one of his family members being murdered in a bust gone wrong. Once he recovers "Machete" spends his days roaming the streets of a Texas town occasionally taking day work, but mostly being a vigilante. He is approached by a Texas millionaire(Jeff Fahey) who wants to hire him to perform a covert operation, but when that operation goes terribly wrong, everyone in "Machete's" path had better watch out. The story unfolds from there... "Machete" has intense nonstop action, intense sequences of bloody violence, nudity and bad guys all over the place. The action is on from the first 2 minutes and does not let up until the end. While the movie is very violent and bloody, there is a real story and plot and both are quite interesting. The movie is also funny at times "Machete" is a definite surprise and is worth seeing if you can stand the gore.
"The American" is "Plotless". An Art House type of flick that is absolutely "Plotless". George Clooney plays an Assassin named Jack who keeps everything very close to the vest. When a job in Sweden goes awry, Jack heads to the Italian countryside to lay low in a sleepy village until his next assignment, but when it comes he is hesitant. Jack soon finds himself being the "Hunted", but his handler seems to not know why. The story unfolds from there... The countries of Sweden and Italy provide the back drop for "The American". If you have never been to either country, you will get a nice glimpse of both. There is a large amount of detail shown in this movie that is usually left out of a Suspense Thriller. I am guessing that this was suppose to make up for the lack of action and no plot. There is a tremendous amount of suspense and intrigue, but again very little action. In fact "The American" while on the same sort of premises as "Jason Bourne" is a complete 180 degrees with regards to action. There is also a larger then usual amount of nudity and sex for a movie like this. "The American" does not give you any history into "Jack" or the "What" or "Why". I sat there wondering the entire time and left the theater unfulfilled. Without a plot I can not give the movie a high rating. I will say that George Clooney does an excellent job of playing an assassin.
"Takers" has been a highly anticipated Crime Thriller, unfortunately it does not deliver!! Remember "The Italian Job" which came out in 2003, well "Takers" is an Urban Chic take on "The Italian Job". The differences are "The Italian Job" was more thrilling, the dialog between the characters made sense and the actors showed some REAL EMOTION!!! You get none of that with "Takers" What a disappointment!! What you do get are some stylishly dressed notorious criminals who have regular jobs by day then spend their evenings plotting bank heist. They continue to baffle the LAPD, but when a really good detective (Matt Dillon) starts to close in on them as they attempt one more heist, things start to fall apart. The story unfolds from there... There is definitely some action, great stunt work, a couple of interesting twists and a lot of gun fire, but it's all very "Ho Hum". Even the end fizzles. The dialog and emotion are non-existent as I indicated earlier. The absolute best thing is looking at the guys in their stylish suits.
Set in New York City "The Switch" is about a 40 year old woman Kassie Larson (Jennifer Aniston) who wants to have a baby, but she isn't in a serious relationship, so she decides to go the sperm donor route. Her best friend Wally (Jason Bateman) tries to reason with her, but they get into an argument and stop speaking. When Wally receives an invitation to a "Getting Pregnant" party from his best friend Kassie (Aniston), he decides to take matters into his own hands. At the party Wally (Bateman) switches the donor's sperm that he accidentally finds in the bathroom with his. The story unfolds from there... "The Switch" is cute and funny, but at times it dragged. I found myself occasionally bored. Jeff Goldblum provides comedy relief in this movie, he is really funny. Jason Bateman should play a leading role more often, he is pretty good.
Usually when a best selling novel is turned into a major motion picture, it doesn't do the book justice. "Eat Pray Love" continues that tradition. It does not do author Elizabeth Gilbert's best selling memoir justice. Julia Roberts plays Elizabeth Gilbert, a woman who has it all (career, money, husband) but wasn't happy with her life. She decides in the middle of the night that she wants a divorce. Her husband tries desperately to hang on to the marriage, but ultimately gives up. Even with the divorce Elizabeth is not happy so she decides to leave her friends and family behind in New York and travel to Italy, India and Bali to try and "Find Herself". The story unfolds from there... One of the biggest problems with "Eat Pray Love" is that there is no transition from one country to another. Unless Gilbert transported herself to each location via something from Star Trek, she had to fly. There were no scenes showing any airports or planes. You were never presented with any sort of time table, so who knows exactly how long she stayed in any of these locations. I found myself bored at times because some parts of the movie dragged and some of the scenes made no sense. On a positive note the cinematography is spectacular. I love Italy, so I really enjoyed that portion of Gilbert's journey. You will see Julia Robert's trademark smile and hearty laugh. She will do what she is supposed to do, give you an escape for a couple of hours. Also I loved Viola Davis in this movie, she plays Elizabeth Gilbert's best friend and co-worker.
"The Expendables" is surprisingly good!! The story is a bit weak and does not go over very well, but the action really makes up for it once it gets going. I expected much more "Old School" action, but there was more CGI used then you would have expected given the actors that are playing in the movie. My only other issue is that Sylvester Stallone's dialogue always sounds like he's mumbling, but other then that I enjoyed seeing the veteran actors go at it. The action is over the top. "The Expendables" are a gang of mercenaries that have been charged with overthrowing a South American dictator who has become a "dish rag" to a Rogue CIA agent. Action Action and more Action. I love the weapons that were used and the plane they flew on was really cool!! Jet Li shows some signs that he still has it, I love Jason Statham and Terry Crews, neither of them takes any prisoners. The movie is very violent and at times very bloody. If you have an even mild interest in seeing "The Expendables" I say go for it.
I am not a Will Ferrell fan, but he was funny and outrageous. "The Other Guys" is definitely better then "Cop Out" (which came out earlier this year). New York's finest has two very beloved Police Detectives Danson and Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson) that always get the bad guys. Then you have the other detectives which are viewed as second rate. Two of the second rate Detectives Gamble and Holtz (Ferrell and Wahlberg) are viewed as "The Other Guys", a joke to the force. They spend their days trying to convince everyone that they are first rate. When Detective Gamble uncovers what he believes is a HUGH money scan that is being committed by a famous Billionaire, his Captain (Keaton) won't take him seriously. The story unfolds from there... Very funny and hilarious, but extremely crude humor and crude sexual content. Will Ferrell will have you in stitches!!
Angelina Jolie's character in "Salt" is a cross between "Jason Bourne" from the Bourne Series and "Ethan Hunt" from the Mission Impossible movies only "Salt" is not as thrilling as either of those, but Angelina Jolie is excellent with what she has been given. The problem with "Salt" is the story is disjointed. Don't get me wrong, there is tons, I mean TONS of action from the first few minutes. In fact once the action starts it's virtually non-stop, but the problem is you don't receive the much needed background information in a timely manner to understand why everything is happening. Angelina Jolie plays a CIA operative who is exposed as a Russian Spy Sleeper or is she? There is a possible threat on the President of the United States. Is "Salt" the assassin? The CIA thinks she is. The story unfolds from there...There are twists and turns, lots of thrills, amazing stunts and car crashes. You will think you have it all figured out but something comes along and you are stumped again. The interesting thing is the door was left open for a second installment.
Oh My Gosh!! Talk about an "Exhilarating Roller Coaster Ride" for your brain. That's what "Inception" is. This is the best Sci-Fi Thriller I have seen in a long time. Imagine if you will someone either invading your dreams or you allowing someone to enter your dreams. The difference between the two is when someone invades your dreams they are after something from your sub-consious, trying to steal some information that you are trying to keep buried. This is what "Inception" is about. Leonardo DiCaprio heads up a team he has assembled to attempt to retrieve some vital information for a client who is willing to pay big. The story unfolds from there...
