While being a Ballerina in a celebrated dance company has it defining moments, it is also a very difficult and demanding profession for the girls and women who are the best dancers. The competition is intense, petty and at times catty. Being a Ballerina can rule every facet of your life, from the moment you wake up until you go to bed at night. Add to that a Mother who is obsessed with you being a Ballerina and has forgotten that you are all grown up and can make your own decisions. This is "Black Swan". Natalie Portman plays "Nina" one such Ballerina. Her passion for her technique rules her every being. The movie is very well acted. Natalie Portman did an excellent job playing "Nina". The film is very edgy with a few twists and turns.
One of the most highly anticipated movies this year, "Tron:Legacy" lives up to it's hype. The CGI effects are off the chain. Many years after Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) disappears, his son Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) now 27 years old looks into his father's disappearance. Sam is ultimately pulled into the same High-Tech digital world of gladiator games and crazy programs where his father has been living for the past 25 years. The story unfolds from there... The only thing wrong with "Tron:Legacy" is at times it drags. It's literally too slow and takes way to long to get to the point. The story in it's self is unbelievable. They got it right with the musical score. The visuals, special effects and action are all on point. The Discs wars rank right up there with the bending walls of the movie "Inception".
Reese Witherspoon plays "Lisa" a member of the United States Women's Professional Softball team. After the team wins a gold medal and the team returns for the start of another season, Lisa is cast aside as past her prime. She then finds herself in a love triangle between Matty (Owen Wilson) a Pro Baseball player and George (Paul Rudd) a Corporate Executive. Each member of the triangle has some sort of issue, ranging from self worth/self esteem problems to legal problems. George's father Charles (Jack Nicholson) tries to help him with his problems, but George won't listen. The two men find themselves competing for Lisa's attention. Lisa can't decide exactly who she wants to be with or what she wants to do. The story unfolds from there... A great cast, but the story is "Been There Done That!". There is no chemistry between Witherspoon, Wilson or Rudd. Remember the tv show"Three's Company"? That 30 minute show each week was better than this 2 hour movie. The movie is rather depressing and not romantic at all.
Remember the 2009 box office flop "Duplicity" starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen? Well "The Tourist" has the same undertones. It's really sad because I had hoped the paid critics were wrong. They really chewed this movie up. First off the absolute best thing about "The Tourist" is that it was shot in Venice. Venice is a beautiful European city that I hope to visit one day. It's also very expensive to shoot a movie there. Money wasted!! The cinematography is really nice. The architecture is magnificent. The first 25 minutes of the movie, there is significant intrigue to make you want to believe that "The Tourist" really is a great thriller, but alas it falls far short of meeting expectations. Johnny Depp was not the right person to play opposite Angelina Jolie. Jolie's stardom demands a much stronger debonair type of male lead. She was beautiful and perfect for the female role. The Dialogue was clip, the pace was painfully slow and the story/plot was totally in left field. The most action you will ever see is a wild boat ride through the waterways of Venice.
Dwayne Johnson plays "Driver" an ex-con who's sole mission in life is to avenge the murder of his brother. Before "Driver's" incarceration he was forced to witness his brother's murder. While "Driver" is in prison, someone kept tabs on all of the people who were involved in the murder, so when "Driver" was release from prison, he would have the most up to date information on each person. One by one "Driver" starts to eliminate each person, but an unknown person who was also involved with the murder is aware of "Driver's" moves. A "Killer" (Oliver-Jackson Cohen) is hired to take out "Driver" the story unfolds from there... Tons of action, fast cars, lots of money and very bloody, that is how I would describe "Faster". "Faster" is rather predictable, but out of nowhere comes a very nice twist toward the end that makes the movie all worth while. If you have a weak stomach, don't see "Faster".
After getting fired from an Electronic Super Store, Jamie Randall(Gyllenhall) decides to try his luck at Pharmaceutical Sales where he ends up selling Viagra. While attempting to leave samples for one of the Doctors in his territory he meets one of the Doctor's patients Maggie(Hathaway), who happens to have stage 1 Parkinsons Disease . The story unfolds from there... "Love and Other Drugs" is ok, but not great! Some of the parts were funny others not so much. I was a tab bit disappointed as I expected better from Anne Hathaway, although she was good in the movie, it could have been better. Men will love this movie because they will get to see Hathaway nude.
Starring in her first major motion picture Christine Aguilera stars as Ali, a small town singer/dancer who seeks to make it big in Hollywood. Ali uses her take charge attitude to get a job as a waitress in a Neo-Burlesque club on Sunset Blvd. The club is run by Tess (Cher). After a few days Ali gets a shot to show what she can do. Everyone is extremely surprised and she is immediately hired as part of the entertainment and a routine is created showcasing her talent, but not without it's share of fallout from at least one of the other dancers. The story unfolds from there... I enjoyed "Burlesque" very much. It's fun, entertaining and enjoyable. There is lots of singing and dancing. If you like Christine Aguilera's singing, then you will enjoy "Burlesque".
Set in Pittsburgh, the everyday life of the Brennan family (Mother, Father and young son) is turned upside down when Lara Brennan (Elizabeth Banks) is falsely accused and arrested for murder. After several hearings and a jury trial where the evidence is compelling and Lara had motive, it becomes apparent that she is not going to be freed. Her husband John (Russell Crowe) works to devise a plan to get her out of prison and ultimately fleet the country, this is "The Next Three Days". The plot is like a slow boiling tea kettle, ready to blow at any minute. The story takes it's time and this will keep you intrigued. "The Next Three Days" is very suspenseful, but it takes way to long to get to the point. The story is somewhat unbelievable because John (Russell Crowe) is an English teacher one minute and becomes "Gladiator" the next. I found myself checking my watch 25 minutes before the movie actually concluded. Not a good sign in my book.
"Unstoppable" is "Fresh", "Entertaining" and "Edge of Your Seat Suspenseful". Does Denzel Washington ever make a bad movie? I think Not!!! "Unstoppable" is based loosely on a true story about a run away train that is a 1/2 mile long and several of it's cars are carrying toxic explosive materials thru rural areas that are populated with family communities. Denzel Washington plays Frank who is a seasoned locomotive engineer, Chris Pine plays Will who is the young upstart in training and Rosario Dawson is Connie the Station Chief. Frank (Denzel) and Will (Chris) work together to try and stop the runaway train when all other attempts fail. Do they succeed? You will have to go see the movie for yourself. "Unstoppable" gives you a look into Big Company business from a dollars and cents perspective. The Locomotive CEO is only interested in how much money will be lost, not about lost lives. Do not got to the bathroom during this movie. You will miss something.
"Fair Game" is very "Suspenseful" and "Intriguing"!! Remember the CIA Operative Valerie Plame who's cover was blown? this is "Fair Game". "Fair Game" is about the events that led up to CIA Operative Valerie Plame's cover being blown by a White House staff member and the fallout afterwards which ultimately lead to some testifying in front of White House committees and several arrests, but was justice really served? "Fair Game" gives you a good look at what goes on inside the walls at the CIA, what happens on assignments and also what happens at the house at 16th and Pennsylvania Ave. "Fair Game" is a gripping story brimmed in anger. Although the movie lacks a good entry point, so you are left wandering about some prior events that may have taken place. Naomi Watts does a good job as Valerie Plame.
