It's tough to do sequels especially a third installment. The first installment was funny, the second installment was cute. But the third installment "Big Mamas:Like Father, Like Son" should have been left on the cutting room floor. Martin Lawrence reprises his role as FBI agent Malcolm Turner. After Malcolm's step-son Trent (Brandon T. Jackson) witnesses a murder, Malcolm and Trent go undercover at an all-girls school to try to catch the killer. One of the best things about this movie is it was filmed mostly in Atlanta, GA. There are some nice panoramic scenes of downtown Atlanta on a sunny afternoon, also some really nice evening and night scenes. The movie is mildly entertaining, but not enough to justify the ticket cost. It's not "Laugh out loud" funny like the previous 2 installments were.
"I Am Number Four" is an action packed thriller about a young man named John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) with extra ordinary skills/powers that are misunderstood by most people. He and his protector (Timothy Olyphant) are continuously hunted by a group of people who want to kill all who are like "Number Four". Three are dead, so the hunt continues. John and his protector finally settle in a small town in Ohio. John tries to lead a normal life by attending High School etc.. but being a teenager has it's ups and downs for a normal person compound that with John Smith's abilities and you have yourself a mess. The visual effects are great and there is some decent action, but that's about it. The story in and of it's self is disjointed. There is no foundation laid as to the history of how "Number Four" came to be.
Set in Berlin, "Unknown" is an engaging thriller that is about so much more then the trailers lead you to believe. Liam Neeson plays a man named Dr. Martin Harris. He and his wife have flown to Berlin to attend a speaking engagement. Discovering that Dr. Harris had left his brief case at the airport, he hops a taxi to return to get it. A terrible accident occurs and Dr. Harris winds up in a coma for 4 days. The story unfolds from there and boy what a story it is. "Unknown" is fast paced, full of intrigue, twists, turns and unexplained holes. There is plenty of action and a seriously awesome car chase. You will be surprised by who the bad guys really are. You will be even more surprised by how the movie actually unfolds. There are times in "Unknown" where you are reminded of the 2009 Knapping Thriller "Taken" that starred Liam Neeson. "Unknown" is worth a look!!
Romantic Comedies are difficult to assess because most of the time what is happening in the movie is really stupid. Well "Just Go With It" is just that, laugh out loud funny and very stupid. With the exception of some strange homophobic scenario toward the end, it's pretty entertaining. Adam Sandler plays a plastic surgeon named Danny who found out early on that women will take pity on him if they believe that he is in an abusive, loveless marriage. He wears a wedding ring and lies about being married. When Danny meets someone he believes it the right woman, by accident she finds what appears to be the wedding ring he usually wears. Danny wants to come clean, but this woman of his dreams is not going to make it easy for him. The story unfolds from there... Good humor, lots of laughs.
Set in Boson, MA, "The Company Men" is about corporate downsizing. A transportation company called "GTX" closes two of it's divisions. Subsequently laying off men and woman in upper management positions. You get a real inside look at how the decision is made to lay someone off. Often times their job performance has nothing what so ever to do with the decision to let a person go. You also get a close-up look at how it effects the families when the main bread winners are jobless. The movie is very well done, a nice compliment to the 2009 movie "Up In The Air" which starred George Clooney. In fact I think that "The Company Men" is a better over all film. The ensemble of actors are first rate (4 Academy Award Winners in one film). The movie is at times emotional, draws anger, sadness and at times draws happiness. "The Company Men" is worth the price of admission.
To have a speech impediment is difficult. To have a speech impediment and be the King in line for the throne of a nation is another story. This is what "The King's Speech" is about. Colin Firth plays England's Prince Albert who is soon to be King George VI. Prince Albert has a crippling speech impediment that has never been addressed. Prince Albert needs to be able to address his country and his people when he accepts the crown. Prince Albert's wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) hires a speech therapist/Australian Actor named Lionel Logue to help rid the future king of his speaking/speech problems. The story unfolds from there... The movie is very well done. Colin Firth shows his acting range. He deserves the Oscar nod he received. The Cinematography was beautiful.
"The Mechanic" is a "Suspense Driven", "Action Thriller" with a no "Holds Barred" approach. The action and intrigue are "In Your Face!!" The movie is bloody, but good!! Jason Statham plays Arthur Bishop an elite "mechanic" with off the wall skills for getting the really bad guys. When his mentor and close friend "Harry" is murdered, Arthur remains cool, calm and collected while he devises a plan to get all parties involved. Things get complicated when "Harry's" son "Steve" (Ben Foster) wants into the plan so he too can go after the people who murdered his Dad. But Arthur is skeptical because Steve is green. Steve does not have the formal training to be a "mechanic". Steve continues to pursue Arthur, so Arthur relents and trains him. The story unfolds from there... Over the top crazy action, intrigue, and suspense!! "The Mechanic" is way better than any "Transporter" movie Jason Statham has played in, but a little off "The Crank" movies.
"No Strings Attached" is a Romantic Comedy that needs some strings to tie it together!! Two long time friends Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) on a whim take their friendship in another direction by having sex. They make a pact to not get attached to each other and to keep their relationship strictly physical, but after time goes by Adam regrets making the pact as he determines he has fallen in love with Emma. When he tries to tell her, their friendship ends... Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman have good on screen chemistry, the problem is there are too many scenarios involving a cluster of people in the movie and it's difficult to put everything in perspective. The movie is at times comical, then shocking, then cheesy and then just plain sweet. There is no edginess at all.
A little over a year ago when I first found out that Seth Rogen had been cast as "The Green Hornet" I was shocked!! The character in the TV version of "The Green Hornet" was "Good Looking", "Serious", "Suave", "Smooth" and "Sexy". Seth Rogen possesses none of those attributes. George Clooney would have been a better fit. If you see "The Green Hornet" it's worth seeing in "3D". The "3D" aspects of the movie are very good especially during action and fight scenes. There are a few interesting action sequences, Jay Chou as "Kato" was very good and about 30 minutes of the 1 hour and 48 minutes of the movie were very intriguing. That is where my accolades for the movie end. Seth Rogen plays Britt Reid a very spoiled and very rich playboy who is content to throw very wild parties and be totally defiant to his father and the family's news paper empire. After Britt Reid's father unexpectedly dies, Britt fines himself a bit lost and then he meets "Kato" one of his father's trusted employees. The story unfolds from there... The story has no cohesion. It's all over the map. There are hugh lulls. The last 30 minutes is nothing but a gigantic train wreck!! Needless to say I am very disappointed that "The Green Hornet" is not better. It is not Blockbuster caliber and I don't expect it to go the distance.
I swear when the western metropolis of "True Grit" appeared, I saw "Dodge City". Jeff Bridges was awesome as an aging US Marshall named Rooster Cogburn. He was at times a cross between "Sheriff Matt Dillon" from Gunsmoke and "Otis The Town Drunk" from Andy of Mayberry. The cast performances were strong, the dialog sometimes "Out There". New comer "Hailee Steinfeld" was really really good. "True Grit"is about a 14 year girl Mattie Ross(Hailee Steinfeld) who hires US Marshall Cogburn(Jeff Bridges) and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf(Matt Damon) to track down her father's killer in hostile Indian territory. They want her to go back home and wait, but the young lady has other ideas...The story unfolds from there... The movie is very well done, it held my attention the entire time. Sometimes it was funny and sometimes it was a bit scary. There was the right amount of action and intrigue. Over all it's definitely a "Must See" if you like Westerns.
