A Depressing and Flat Story

Based on the International best seller by David Nicholls, "One Day" is not quite as good as the book.
"One Day" is about the lives of two protagonists (an idealist and a rich play boy) who for 20 years are friends who are in love with each other, but waste so much time before they actually get around to acknowledging their feelings for one other and stop wasting time being miserable with other people.
For 20 years on July 15th, these two people either meet somewhere or speak to each other on the phone. They do this even though they are in relationships with other people, but one day things change. The story unfolds from there...
The story starts off very silly. The entire movie is rather depressing and flat. There is no excitement. The On-screen chemistry between Ann Hathaway and Jim Sturgess is non-existent. Ann Hathaway's British accent deminished as the movie dragged on. Wait for this one on cable.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

A Deep and Heartwarming Story!!

"The Help" is an "Extremely Deep and Heartwarming Movie" that will make your emotions run the gamut.
Based on the New York Times best selling novel by Kathryn Stockett, "The Help" is about how three very different, extraordinary women in 1960's Mississippi become friends while sharing and contributing to a secret story that is being written. It's not readily known if the story will be published but when it is, all hell breaks loose. The story unfolds from there...
Very well done. "The Help" is a really good movie. The cast is great and full of veteran actors. The story comes together nicely. "The Help" is definitely worth the price of admission.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Awful!!

Remember the 2003 comedy "Freaky Friday"? "The Change-UP" has pretty much the same premises, Body Switching.
Jason Bateman plays an overworked successful corporate attorney and family man named "Dave" and Ryan Reynolds plays "Mitch" Dave's happy-go-lucky friend. Out together one night, Dave and Mitch start to reminiscence about what it used to be like when Dave was single. Mitch wonders what it would be like to be married with children. So after they both get wasted, they end up in a city park at a fountain where they both urinate in the foundation (This act is significant). Dave and Mitch manage to get to their respective homes safely, but when they wake up the next day their personalities and lives have been swtiched. The story unfolds from there...
You will get a pretty good laugh from "The Change-Up", but there is so much silliness and stupidity about it that I found myself wanting it to end quickly. The best thing about the movie was that it was filmed in Atlanta, GA. Which is where I used to live!!
Parental Warning: The movie also contains a large amount of profanity, nudity and sexual content.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Hilarious Romantic Comedy!!

"Crazy, Stupid, Love" was not bad, not bad at all.
Steve Carell plays Cal Weaver, a 40 something straight-laced guy with a great job and what appears to be a perfect life, but Emily (Julianne Moore) his wife of 25 years cheats on him and has asked Cal for a divorce. Cal's response to that is to dive out of a moving car. After Cal moves out of the family home, he makes nightly visit to a posh bar. There he meets Jacob (Ryan Gosling), a very sophisticated suave guy who knows how to get the ladies. Jacob takes Cal under his wing to teach him how to dress, get a better hair cut and talk to women. The story unfolds from there...
Absolutely hilarious!! "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is definitely a Screwball Romantic Comedy. There is great on screen chemistry between all of the main actors.
"Crazy, Stupid, Love" is worth seeing. You will get a good laugh, you may even shed a tear.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Space Aliens & Gold!!

The age old commodity of "GOLD", that's ultimately what "Cowboys & Aliens" is about.
A complete stranger (Daniel Craig) who has no memory of his past ends up in Absolution, AZ. He's wearing a strange bracelet that he cannot seem to remove. He has a wound that he doesn't know how he got. Although he can't remember who he is, he is recognized by the Sheriff and local posse as a wanted thief and arsonist plus a number of other charges. He is taken into custody and about to be taken to see the judge, but before the stage coach leaves, strangers arrive...The story unfolds from there...
I am sorry, but I am not feeling "Cowboys & Aliens" at all. This was the most insane story (Space Aliens needing gold) and plot I have ever heard and seen. I can't think of anything that was good about the movie. Although there is quite a bit of action, but that's it. It's unfortunate that a good cast has gone to waste. It appears that the story never really comes together.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

A Decent Romantic Comedy!!

Have you ever tried to be "Best Friends" with someone from the opposite sex? It's possible if there is no sexual chemistry between you, but if there is...oh well... This is what "Friends with Benefits" is about.
A recruiter named Jamie (Mila Kunis) and her Los Angeles client Dylan (Justin Timberlake) hit it off after he has secured the NY job with GQ magazine that Jamie set him up for. They think it will be easy to be "Best Friends" they even make a pact to not get serious with each other, but after they start having sex before they know it they have fallen for each other, but neither one wants to admit it. The story unfolds from there...
Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis have a lot of on-screen chemistry and that is what makes this movie work. "Friends with Benefits" is actually a decent romantic comedy.
There is quite a bit of sexual content, so this movie is not for anyone under seventeen.
The comedic element is also there, which makes the movie a bit light-hearted and not too heavy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Good Adaptation of a Comic Book Superhero!!

Director Joe Johnston got this one right. "Captain America: The First Avenger" is pretty good!!
Steven Rogers was found unfit for military service, but that did not stop him from continuing to try to get in. He volunteers for a top secret science research project. The results turn him into Captain America, a superhero who is dedicated to defending America's ideals. The story unfolds from there...
All of the elements are there. Good story, lots of action, intrigue, special effects and decent cinematography. The story is a little bit heart-warming, a little bit cheesy and has a bit of adventure. "Captain America: The First Avenger" does a nice job of giving you enough background so that you understand the basis for Captain America's existence. There is a 1940's feel along with WWII related scenes. Of course let's not forget that there is a really crazy villian that rules his ugly head. There is also a surprise at the end of the movie that leads into a different movie...you have to go see it to find out.
If you are a comic book fan, you will love "Captain America: The First Avenger".
The door was left open...
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Very Raunchy!!!

You know the fears that you have in your job of being passed over for a promotion, suddenly laid-off or better yet sexually harrassed, these are the premises for "Horrible Bosses".
Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) are all employees at different companies with repressed hatred for their employers. One night in a bar after having too much to drink they plot to murder their bosses. The story unfolds from there...
"Horrible Bosses" is laugh out loud funny, very profane, juvenile and raunchy. The language used alone will make you put your hands over your ears. The movie sort of reminds me of the September 2009 comedy hit "Burn After Reading".
"Horrible Bosses" is "Black Comedy" at it's best!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Light-Hearted and Cute!!

A case of mistaken identity is the basis of "Monte Carlo".
Grace (Selena Gomez), her best friend Emma (Katie Cassidy) and her stepsister Meg (Leighton Meester) leave their Texas home to embark on a Paris Tour trip for a summer adventure. The pre-paid tour falls short of expectations. While contemplating what to do next, Grace is suddenly mistaken for a British Millionaire named Cordelia. This mistaken identity comes with hugh perks, Grace and her entourage head to Monte Carlo to enjoy a week of auctions, polo matches, society parties and good looking bachelors. There is plenty of fun for all, but then the real Cordelia shows up at the Monte Carlo Hotel and the story unfolds from there...
"Light-Hearted, Cute, Fun and Entertaining", "Monte Carlo" has a lot of dis-jointed scenes (bad editing) where you are left putting the story together yourself. Although "Monte Carlo" is a nice attempt to give young girls a fantasy-like entertaining summer movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Over the top Action!!

You know that phrase "Beaten into submission". Well when you see "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" you will be beaten into submission. This third installment is so much better then the second installment. There is so much action and it's so way over the top that sometimes it doesn't make sense.
This third installment finds the evil Decepticons renewing their long-standing war against the Autobots. Sam (Shia LaBeouf) and his new girlfriend Carly (Rose Huntington-Whiteley) get caught up in the fray. Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) thinks that resurrecting a former long time leader Ancient Sentinel Prime (Leonard Nimoy) of the Autobots could some how lead them to victory, but there are devastating circumstances that rule their ugly head and Optimus Prime is forced to rethink and possibly regret his decision. The story unfolds from there...
There is so much going on in the movie that parts of the story has holes that are never filled. As I mentioned in my opening the action is constant and over the top. The special effects are out of this world. The cinematography is crazy good. The movie is fasted paced and on the edge of your seat thrilling at times. But there are some other things that are not so great. How many times can Optimus Prime get injured without dying? He should be the "Bionic Man" instead of a "Transformer". What happened to Sam's parents? They make several appearances but then vanish into thin air with no explanation. You don't know if they are dead or alive. There are other people who have an ax to grind with Sam and the military, but you are not given enough information to understand why.
The paid critics were not very kind regarding their reviews, I think on some fronts they are wrong.
With all of that being said "Transformers:Dark of the Moon" is definitely worth seeing. It is best seen in IMAX 3D. It's obvious that most of the movie was shot in 3D, so to get the full effect you really need to see it in IMAX 3D.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
