Meet Me Halfway

After being disappointed with the new X-Men film, I was optimistic for this one because it seemed that it would deliver from what I saw in previews and reviews. The first half of the film follows Steve Rogers: scrawny, wanting to join the greatest war in history, and unable to overcome his small stature that kept him from serving. We were shown very clear character elements that ought to have unfolded over the course of the film, like his doubts and courage, but after Steve becomes big and strong everything that the film has been leading up to is completely dropped. Character development and rationale is forgotten, and it becomes very clear that this movie was made to sell toys as the second half becomes a random sequence of fights and action sequences that are 1) confusing to the plot, 2) low stakes, as the Captain takes down everyone VERY easily with only his shield (he uses nothing else the whole movie) and, 3) poorly done. The direction was all over the place, dipping into many styles which I felt were conflicting with each other, ex. the biggest disappointment was the contrast between the exciting gritty nature of his costume (translating superheroes into the real world is very important, it draws us in as it becomes more believable,) and the heavy use of visual effects that were laughable. I could not enjoy the movie because the choices did not make any sense together. Finally, back to story, the tension between Cpt. America and Red Skull was dull and uninteresting because there was maybe only one line about how the two of them were different from everybody else (think Dark Knight-only bad.) And the final battle between the two was anticlimactic and without purpose. On the plus side, Tommy Lee Jones delivers a humorous performance that is sprinkled throughout, definitely the strength of the picture.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Good Movie

Very solid Christopher Nolan film, very clear he is a master of his style as it shines through every moment of the film. The ideas were complex but engaging, and the action quite fun. My only issues were with a few script constructions (dialogue in some spots, but lots of movies have this problem) and the movie could have been 30 minutes shorter. Mr. Nolan is terrific with suspense, but there is perhaps too much as I found it a little dull after a while. Regardless, still a good film and definitely worth seeing.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
