This movie sensationalized the all-too-real misery of India's poor, adding gratuitous violence and a ridiculous "love story" for good measure. I'm disgusted by those who are responsible for recognizing quality - to the extent that they determine the winner of the Academy Award for "Best Picture!" That they chose this as the year's best picture can only mean that the award is either completely political, or there was not one decent movie made in 2008.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
