The characters are largely unsympathetic, the ending does not redeem the ugliness of a key character (but is supposed to), the main character is a pain.
Cons not credible, the characters aren't folks you'd like
I've found Woody Allen's works to be uneven, some good, some not so good. This is one of the good ones. To clarify, it's worth seeing, but not the movie of the year.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Nothing you haven't seen before, but it is done really well.
Perhaps a beginner class for psychotherapists could use this movie as a teaching tool. The scenes where the characters get along well shows their pretentiousness and the other scenes are just bummers.
Secret message to Ethan Hawke: before your next movie, shave and wash your hair. And if your character is at least middle class, wear a nice selection of clean, pleasant clothing.
If you are looking for credibility, you won't find it here. But I'm glad I saw this film. The plot is so old it is creaky but the acting, dialog and setting are excellent. Sometimes it's nice to see a classic, unrealistic hackneyed plot, when it's done by professionals.
Nothing in The Sapphires is new, but the execution is very good. I enjoyed it a lot. The actors all do a fine job and the music (Motown covers) is fine.
