This could have been another "planes, trains and automobiles" with John Candy type hit but this was too slow and muddled in certain spots. The movie tries too hard and it is evident in certain areas. The writing becomes not so clear and less funny than it could be. I must say I was disappointed because I expected more from Downey and after "Hangover" I felt confident I picked a winner-- and as Yoda would say," wrong I was."
This movie was surprisingly real in its bite and presentation than I'm sure most people in America are accustomed. It's grit, truth and rawness made it both interesting and almost painful from my point of view. It was also poignant and touching. Clint as a war veteran with all of his experiences overseas showed himself to be somewhat shallow but 'open' to learning about other cultures. You watch as the characters stretch themselves and Clint realizes with astonishment that the Hmong living next door are more like him than he thought. He takes us with him forcing us to care for him and the boy next door and his family. A great drama of both self discovery and true heroism. Clint & his ensemble are great!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. My son and I were taken on an exciting odysssey of culture, survival, faith, hope and triumphant optimism. Gai HO- Be victorious was a wonderful chanting theme throughout this saga. Best movie I've seen all year! Bravo Slumdog, what a surprise!
