While I did not like this film as much as I wanted to I certainly think that it is worth watching—I went to see it primarily because I adore Kate Winslet. With a two-hour running time, there were a few instances midway through that I felt the story dragging, but the conclusion had my rapt attention—I went in thinking that I knew how the movie would end but was mistaken. Overall, a thought-provoking and entertaining movie.. Just don't expect to feel like going out and partying after you see it!
I saw the first "Underworld" film when it was released in theaters in 2003 and it instantly became a favorite. I was far less impressed with "Underworld: Evolution" so was wary of this third installment. The absence of Kate Beckinsale's character Selene was worrisome—because this film is a prequel she isn't born yet. Michael Sheen (Lucian), however, is fantastic and carries the story on his own with no problem. A final point that I'll touch on is that of traditionalism—it seems that a fair amount of people who have seen the first two "Underworld" movies don't like them because they're based in modern times. This prequel takes place during the Middle Ages, which should please those who dislike the mixing of guns and vinyl with vampires!
I've been an avid Neil Gaiman fan for some years now and was concerned that this film adaptation of his book would be sub-par—thankfully, my worries were completely unfounded! I'm 26 years old, yet found myself staring in open-mouthed wonder at the screen for the duration of the story. The 3D aspect was incredible—this was the first time that I had seen a movie done in this manner, and it added fantastic depth to the images. I really hope that I'll love "Coraline" as much without the 3D because I'll certainly purchase the DVD as soon as it's available!
