I get the excitement and the lure of the romance between Bella and Edward and Jacob and Bella. But all of the characters bring something to this Saga and this is really the first time we see it in the films. The first two books go into more detail about the other Cullen’s, which was left out of the first two movies. Eclipse steps back and takes the focus off on Bella, Edward and Jacob, to bring life into the characters that have always been there, but just in the background. The back stories of Jasper and Rosalie help out these two characters that have been physically present in both of the earlier films but had little to say. There’s no need to go into a synopsis because fans of the book have read the entire Saga (some multiple times) and know the story. If you haven’t read the books I suggest you do so. How I was impressed: In keeping with the PG-13 rating, I think that David Slade did and excellent job showing us what was only eluded to or quickly talked about in Eclipse. This was by far the darkest of the four books/movies. By that I mean the violence that was taking place in Seattle; the uncontrollable newborns, the surfacing of Riley and the importance of his role with the newborn army. Also the dark pasts that Rosalie and Jasper emerge from. One scene I was really glad they kept in the movie was the scene when Emmett and Paul nearly go to blows while in the pursuit of Victoria. I think that the juxtaposition of violence and angst ridden love was sometimes jarring, but it worked well. It made the sweeter parts of the movie seem more meaningful. With the understanding of pacing and time constraints; I think they did a good job including pivotal key points from the book in the movie. My favorite line: “I’m hotter than you!” How I was disappointed: Okay first I’m no actor, but there are some scenes that are just too hard to watch, it is almost cringe worthy. In a way I get the frustration, that people who have not read the books and love them, feel when going into these movies blindly. I would have to say that if I were not a fan of the books I would have a hard time sitting through the movies. I thought that Chris Weitz elicited better performances in New Moon. Overall, for the fans of this Saga, we are 3 of five movies down. There will be no further [main] cast member changes, they are sticking with the same writer, while changing directors. I’ve made it this far and will stick it out through to the end. Perhaps the films the actors are making in between finishing Eclipse and starting the first installment of Breaking Dawn, will beef up their acting skills. Looking forward, I’ve been reading a lot of things about the sex, and blood and babies coming up in Breaking Dawn. Since they are keeping the next two films PG-13, for me that’s really not an issue. I’m all about the characters that help round out the story; so since they are breaking this last book up I expect to see most if not all of the vampire “witnesses” recruited by the Cullen’s in the second half of Breaking Dawn.
