I had an afternoon free with my younger daughter (11) and we were talking about seeing a movie. When I mentioned "Real Steel" she said, "That's with Hugh Jackman, right?" With a roll of my eyes, I said, "Yes" and we went to see it at the IMAX.
I was expecting "Rocky with Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots" and to an extent, we got that. However, one thing we also got was a compelling story about an absentee father and his estranged son who are brought together by the death of the boy's mother. On their road trip through the robot boxing underground, the two get to know each other and begin to forge a relationship. Through their ups and downs, they find themselves beginning to care for each other and in an emotional moment, the boy turns from calling his father, "Charlie" to saying, "That's my dad!"
Some parts of this film were certainly predictable but it doesn't detract from what I find to be a very good movie.
The PG-13 rating is deserved for some course language and certainly violence, but most of the violence is robot on robot violence. I would (and have) recommend this movie to my friends and even encourage them to bring their families.
I took my daughter and one of her friends to see this on opening day, as has become our tradition. All three of us are fans of the books. The movie did a good job of laying out the story. While certainly skipping some details from the book and even adding a few things that were not in the book, this movie did an excellent job of telling the story.
I felt the acting was very good. Each character was believable. My only knock would be that Allan Rickman seemed to have "phoned in" his part, but honestly, the Snape character is supposed to be emotionless anyway, so perhaps that was a good thing.
Great cinematography and quite emotional, especially to the climax. All three of us enjoyed the film and would recommend it to others.
The movie was funny and entertaining. The kids (ranging from age 5 to 14) all enjoyed it. The 3D was well done and not distracting like is often the case with a 3D movie.
I took 5 kids to see this movie for a Saturday "Bargain" price. It was still 10 bucks a head PLUS the $1 surcharge per ticket to purchase them from MovieTickets.com (plus $2 surcharge to "recharge" my movietickets.com card). After paying for the tickets, all of the surcharges and a popcoren/drink for each person, I was out $135. I feel the price paid was not worth it.
