I've heard this movie panned for lack of clever writing, and I just don't get it. It may not have the layers of cultural references that the Toy Story or Shrek franchises have, but that doesn't mean it completely lacks depth. We (mom, teen boy, tween boy) thought it was a great movie with fun, original characters, great action, and some really clever lines and plot movers that had us laughing out loud.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
