I looked forward to this movie and i'm glad I saw it. But alas, I found the new HP mildly disappointing, lacking the fine-tuned light-and-dark balance and the strong supporting characters of previous films. Visually, IMHO, it's oddly lackluster—more self-consciously arty, less fun. Nevertheless, there are bright spots. Luna's swell; so's Draco, who has matured very interestingly—he could be 15 or 50. Ron's lovestruck turn is loopy and inspired. The friendship between Harry and Hermione is deep and touching. And Snape--well, Alan Rickman can do more with the space between two words than any other mortal.
Phenomenal acting, great suspense, sly humor...Denzel Washington and John Travolta locked in their pas de deux are fascinating. James Gandolfini does a sharp, funny turn as a mayor who's not so dumb after all, and John Turturro starts out a bureaucrat and ends up a warrior.
The tightrope conversations, the human drama are great. The big screechy car crashes—not so much. I closed my eyes and rattled my Good 'n Plentys. Nice to have a break. And the movie is so good, the excess pyrotechnics don't matter.
Just watch Gandolfini's reaction to a reporter's personal question... Denzel Washington confessing (for real?) to buy time... Travolta at the very end. Soak up how much this movie loves New York.
