Lincoln is a compelling movie about the courage and craftiness of a President intent on preserving and rebuilding a united nation. The acting is superb -- especially Daniel Day Lewis. But it does take time for the movie to build to a level of suspense that culminates in the vote on whether slavery should be abolished. I learned a lot about Lincoln that I didn't know -- primarily about the strength of his character and convictions but also about his willingness to bargain with, lobby and even coerce his opponents into compliance with his end goal. I also saw a softer side to the President as a husband and loving father. It's a great flick.
This movie is not likely to get a "best in show" award but Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio deserve recognition for outstanding acting performances. They personified the conflict between a husband and wife who are torn between love and ambition but lack the guts and gusto to survive either. The plot moves slowly at times but there are some powerful emotional scenes between Kate and Leo that bring out the best acting in both.
Slumdog Millionaire is easily one of the top movies of the season. It is a heartwarming film that features the virtues of honesty, innocence, care and compassion for others. The flick is a feel-good movie about poor kids in the slums of Mumbai who overcome incredible odds as they mature to adulthood. The scenes are as stark as the circumstances and beautifully portrayed by young actors. A must-see movie!
