Despite all the movie buzz, I went with no expectations in order to form my own opinion. As the story unfolds, you begin to feel all the societal angst that each character must have felt as they tried to conform to the ways of life during that era. It was like being told a good story that you did not want to end.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I've loved the novel and the various plays I've seen over the years, but I went with low expectations as not to be disappointed. I was not disappointed. Each actress owned her part. The directing and rewrite were so timely that even those who discover For Colored Girls for the first time will not be disappointed.
The story was slow to build up and a little disjointed when it got started (the dog/boar-like creatures and Fishburne's character). I was either really tired or the story was very boring - - I dozed off a couple of times.
An excellent movie that leaves you feeling both triumphant and troubled by the time the credits roll. You witness a person who stands to lose everything go beyond fear and intimidation to fight not only for her freedom, but also for the freedom of an entire community. That's triumphant. The genuine raw emotions of each character were so effectively portrayed by the actors that you almost dismiss this as a good movie with a well written story line until you remember that it was based on a true story. That's troubling.
