The action is good, the late Heath Ledger's Joker excellent, but what makes this an outstanding movie is its focus on what happens when good men are arrogant enough to try for greatness in the face of evil. Wayne, Gordon, and Dent learn this lesson under the Joker's tutelage--and it is an excruciating school for them all.
