I love a great sports movie and a good sports movie should embody the passion and dynamics of an 11/11 9th inning contest. But this movie falls way short. Except for a few scenes I was acutely aware that I was waiting for the next turn of events. Virtually lacking in dynamic tension this picture lapsed continually into quiet somber units which has little meaning because there were so few plot or character obstacles to give the rest of the story some vitality. Would have been better to cut it down to 100 minutes at least. Rent the DVD of Billy Crystal's 61*. This is a great sports picture about Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle.
Sorry, George. Love you. Hate the script. A 50 minute first act, no character arc for our hero. Vera Farmiga as Clooney's love interest and Anna Kendrick have great qualities. But if you are discerning enough to spot a lame script then this picture is not for you. You'll find yourself thinking "this movie is really long" only find out you've been in the theatre for only an hour. Entirely unsatisfying and a waste of acting talent and $8.50 - put Jason Reitman on your list of director who should not be allowed to write.
Anne Hathaway fails miserably in her first "challenging" role. A perfect demonstration of Hollywood nepotism (Jenny Lumet is the daughter of Sidney) a "name" means you don't have to know good story. As Demme says, this picture "barely has a story". 2 hours of emotional masterbation is supposed to equate a courageous journey of recovery. Jonathan, stick to documentaries for the causes you champion. Anne, stick to ingenue roles. Jenny - get out of town.
