Animation with a Moral

This isn't just a kids movie. Yes it has a lot of dialogue and actions that appeal to kids but it is a parable about the fear of being different. The dragons except the 'Queen' are drawn cute and loveable enough for kids to cuddle, in spite of the dragons being treated like vermin to be exterminated. Also the theme of manhood being defined by one's ability to kill - is a deeper issue this story addresses. There are some violent scenes but they are more than compensated for by the outcomes so it is perfectly appropriate for the little ones - and holds as much interest for the big ones too.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Green Ultimatum

I was completely aborbed in this movie. Matt plied his usual talent and carried the story like a loaded gun. But instead of blindly following orders his real weapon, the most devasting of all was the truth. Admitedly this is fiction, like Hurt Locker, but it is based on the facts that we were lied to about WMDs - something the rabid neocons are still denying- and they can take a pass on this uncompromising action thriller. That same fanatical dangerous patriotism that led us into this war like a an ox by the nose - is lowering the ratings with all the right wing rantings.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Can't care about Keira

In spite of the beautiful casting, with Keira Knightley as Vera, this is a cruel and unusual excuse for a movie. Slow histrionic, empty, pretentious, really really slow and a great cure for insomnia. Oh did I say how slow it was?
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Taken by Storm

An exciting entertaining way to spend an afternoon (or evening). Liam Neeson is as good a dramatic actor as he is an action hero. His no holds barred vigilante mission to retrieve his daughter fires this movie from beginning to end.
Two minor criticisms -
The role of the 17 year old daughter is played too young. She is constantly skittering across rooms to hug Daddy in giggles and smiles.
The fight scenes are too fast to follow so all the clever moves are lost and only mean something when they're done.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

over the top excitement

The plot, the acting, the special effects, cinematography combine to create edge-of-the-seat excitement and suspense. It delivers all the action - fantasy fun of a Saturday matinee story like Raiders of the Lost Ark, but with state of the art high -tech sophistication. My one objection is that the fight scenes are in real time - and therefore, too fast to really follow properly. Slow-mo seems to be going out of style - but there was a good reason for it. The movie is still a great experience.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A Ride on the East Side

The old world meets the new in this intense, entertaining and moving parable about violence and racism in America. The Dirty Harry machismo teaches the pretentious gang culture the meaning of tough - and 'accidently' does his next door Hmong neighbors a favor. Their indebtedness is irresistible even for this crusty veteran and so is this movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A sure thing

The excellence of the play-based script and the actors, Streep and Hoffman, is enough reason to see this move.
Viola Davis deserves special mention and proves there are no small parts.
The negatives are all the usual ones expected when translating a made for stage play into a movie. Unfortunately, Shanley overplays the ' visuals rain storms etc. that threaten to turn an otherwise realistic portrayal into a gothic caricature.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
