Extraordinary Performances in a Great Film

Saw TKS last night with a potential to dislike it because I had very high expectations. But I loved TKS even more than I thought I would. The film is superbly written and directed, and compelling and believeable at every turn (save one, see below). But the real coup de grace are the performances and especially that of Colin Firth. Last year, I thought he deserved the statue for A Single Man, but this performance is even better. To stammer throughout the film in a way that is so credible is extraordinary all by itself, but Firth's performance is beautiful way beyond the stammer. He's surely one of the best actors working today. And the film manages to suck you in. With each stammer, you feel for the character. I could see those around me -- and I was doing it too -- leaning forward as if to try to help him get the words out. What a film, what a performance. Only small criticism -- and it's quite small -- is one scene in which the older brother breaks down at his father's bedside. It was poorly acted by Guy Pearce and rather unbelievable. But it was the sort of thing you'd never notice in an average film. It stuck out here only because every other moment of TKS is otherwise extraordinary.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
