This is a character study, as well as an exploration of familial and societal dynamics. The performances of Thomas and Zylberstein really stand out, and the others are strong. The "surprise" ending was no surprise to me...but I didn't mind going along for the ride as the secrets unfolded and the dynamics changed.
The performances are great, but the movie stinks. It's a self-absorbed film about a self-absorbed protagonist. I was prepared for an artsy film, but it was: slow, long. surreal, unreal, thought-provoking, overreaching, but basically NOT worth $10.75. 5 of 20 walked out during, and another 6 congregated afterward, saying "why did we????" it's a mostly tedious, eventually boring look, into fears about living, dying, success and failure. i was the only one to appreciate (get) the few amusing moments. if you are not an "art-hound", skip it. maybe watch the video in 1/2 hour increments.
This movie is presenting a snippet of Poppy's life. She's one of those incessantly cheerful types, which can be really annoying. Her life and relationships are presented in a series of somewhat disjointed scenes. She's had some adventures, and has a "good job, good friends, a lucky life", and is unfettered by thoughts of a mortgage and a pension. She chooses to see the positive, as opposed to being overcome by the negative. This is most evident in the series of scenes with the driving instructor, who is a rageaholic. Problems include the lack of character development of the supporting players. Also, the ending is rather soft, and unsatisfying, although entirely consistent with the internal structure of the film.
