While thoroughly predictable, this is a well-written, smart, funny film. Great performances by all (tho' Martin is a bit underused for his comedic skills). Some scenes generated such laughs, the ensuing dialogue was missed. It was an enjoyable 2 hours.
This was truly an "experience". The plot is pretty predictable, but this is still a 5 star movie because of the exciting manner in which the 3D is utilized. You really feel like you are on another planet, brushing up against the plants, or flying on a beast's back.
I hope this signals the direction future 3D movies will be heading.
This is a multi-layered tale, on many levels. And, it works on all of them. The plot and characters retained my interest. I was even surprised by a plot twist i didn't see coming, and that rarely happens.
Strong performances, lush cinematography, decent score, and a few "in-jokes" for Almodovar fans. You could do way worse with your movie $$ (e.g., Sherlock Holmes).
I am not a fan of period pieces, but this is a powerful film. It's got it all: political intrigue, personal/family drama, and a love story. The performances are excellent, it's a cinematographic dream, and it has an excellent score. It's well worth your movie $$$, and will likely receive 5 or 6 oscar nominations, perhaps more. You heard it here, first!!! :D
PROS - decent performances; i was ok w/ re-envisioning SH as a younger, more brash persona than depicted in the novels; uhh..yeah, i guess that's it... CONS - action scenes are good, but the interstices (the rest of the movie) are slow and plodding - checked my watch many times; plot - transparent and predictable = boring; score - really annoying. SUM - it's really a 2 1/2 stars film, at best. wait for dvd or cable - that's where i'll be viewing the obviously intended sequel.
A coming of age in the '60s tale, interesting for it's perspective. Aside from some excellent performances, not much else to recommend this pic, as it's rather formulaic. Confession: my clearview cinema was running a copy that had a defect - a scratch - manifesting as a yellow/green/black line visible at the quarter left of the screen for a full hour. it was totally distracting, annoying, and irritating. i've reviewed the film as honestly as possible...but, clearview gets an F. "clear view"??? give me a break!!!
i liked the animation, but that's all i liked, the story is just plain boring. the vocal performances are fine, but no more than that, "cute" trademark vocalisations notwithstanding. the timing was off. i panned 'ASTRO BOY", and i'd sooner subject myself to a repeat of that, than view this one again. DO NOT BUY INTO THE HYPE!
This is a film that will be lauded by critics, and deplored by the viewing populace. Pros: stellar performances; visually stunning/intriguing; good fodder for discussion. Cons: excessive narration, disjointed; slow pacing to the point of boredom. Sum: post-apocalyptic tale of good vs bad guys - overprotective father acts more like bad guy, brought back to moral center by naive son. intended moral: there is always hope. sorry, not buying...i walked away thinking the kid got eaten.
A coming of age story which was thoroughly enjoyable, if not terribly original. Cast performances are good; the main characters are fairly well developed, the rest are caricatures. The direction was fine, aside from a few scenes. The mother/daughter relationship dynamic is the soul of this film; but, it is driven by the exuberance of the derby. The "first love" romance is mostly forgettable, but ends surprisingly. A sweet, spirited take on an old story that you've seen before.
the worst horror movie EVER!! no scares, no suspense, just a mess of laughable hand-held video with a bunch of smarmy, smart-aleck comments by the male lead.
totally missable. not even worthy of renting a dvd or watching on cable.
truly, deserves zero stars - if only that were an option.
