It is not often that I would say that a movie is better when seen in a theater. I really like the comfort of home when watching and I like the lower rental prices and convenience. But there are some films that are just plain better with the experience of a crowds reaction and some that require the full theater sound system and some that... well you get the point, there are reasons to see a movie in a theater.
I saw the first PA at home on a dark night and enjoyed the creepiness of the camera technique and the suspense it engendered. I wondered if it would have been better or worse in a theater, having seen Blair Witch Project and disliked the theater experience. So when this 'sequel' came out I decided to give it a full on theater experience try. We even watched it in IMAX having just moved to a city that had one close enough. Impressed does not cover it!! The experience was so much more than the first film from opening to close, The subsonic sounds that the theater system used made an already creepy feeling grow into deep unease and made the suspense just that much more creepy. Having seen an afternoon showing there were few other people there, but hearing the reactions of those few made the movie more enjoyable. The movie itself was well developed and the plot was a bit more believable, to me, than the first film. I loved the various reactions of the characters to what was going on and the way they steadfastly remained true to their beliefs until they no longer could. And the twist at the end was a very well done ending for the movie. I give kudos and my recommendation to see the movie where it was intended to be seen... in a theater full of live bodies all experiencing the full effect of the theater sound system and with all of the bells and whistles.
Twilight was one sided and about discovery and awareness of the extraordinary, New Moon is a study of contrasts. First we have betrayal by Edward leaving Bella alone, triggering anxiety and withdrawal. Then there is the loyalty of Jacob who draws Bella out and awakens feelings of security. This movie is about choices and how emotional values and what is 'right' can be hard to discern when feelings override logical thought.
Teen angst prevails despite, or because of, the arrested development of the 109 y.o. teenage vampire. Confusion and groping for the right responses is a major theme for the new teen werewolf. And between these lies the emotional turmoil that is Bella, a human caught in a world where 'everything may be true'.
I was impressed that the entire backstory was completed before the title even hit the screen. If you loved the first three movies in the original series, but thought that the rest were a load of crap, you must see this movie. It contains tributes to the best of the series and rebuilds the legend beginning with those stories and creating a brand new look at what could have been a horribly overworked rehash. The new storyline fits well within the perameters that made the original movies great without relying on outright gore or superfluous nudity and sex scenes. This is what a horror movie should be.
