I always expect excellence from Meryl, but part of me thinks she missed the mark in this one. It has nothing to do with the fact that she played the role in a more toned-down fashion than Cherry Jones; in fact, I quite liked the decision. However, when it got to the end of the film, I sat there a little annoyed. It is not that it ended in unresolved, because I like unhappy endings, but something about her performance in that last scene left me a little dry. It is weird to say that because the woman is obviously a genus, but perhaps she missed the mark this time. PSH and Amy Adams were terrific, and I would say that overall, the movie was fantastic.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
