First the special effects. Spoiler alert so if you don't want to know a few things stop reading!
The sound and special effects were amazing! I saw it in IMAX 3D and I am ruined. When Black Beard's powers take over the ship the combination of sound, filmography, music and effects is overwhelming. There are several scenes like that including some of the amazing mermaid scenes. You will not be disappointed in this film for the simple reason that it is a cinematic wonder.
Now, the story. I have to rate this the 2nd best of the Pirates franchise. Number one is and likely always will be number one. Four is good but not great from a story standpoint, just ahead of Pirates 2 in my opinion.
As was the case in all of the franchise movies after #1 the movie just has gaps and events that are never fully explained. We almost have too much going on, too many characters and conflict, and too much mystery.
As for the events that don't logically add up, leaving Angelica (Penelope Cruz) on the island at the end really made very little sense. And that is because we only receive snippets of the entire relationship between Jack and Angelica. And her relationship with Black Beard was never fully fleshed out. I assume part of the reason for this is Pirates 5 and we have to have questions to answer, but at least fill in the story in to the point that events in this film make sense.
And Jack is Jack, always funny, always a joy to watch.
Overall definitely worth seeing. But don't expect the tightest storyline. You get the standard superior Depp performance and you get incredible effects, sound and a visual joy.
This is a very solid sequel primarily due to the growth of Shia Labeouf and Megan Fax as actors. This time they rely on more than just Labeouf's endearing qualities and Fox's extraordinary beauty. While they both retain those qualities (Fox is even more stunning than in the original and at time takes you breath away), both are actually getting their acting chops, and the combination makes this a much better than average sequel.
The special effects are amazing but Michael Bay and company at times rely a bit too much on them. I thought it was very interesting that the pain in the butt governement bureaucrat this time around was Obama's national security advisor. Not exactly politically correct for Hollywood and that is very refreshing.
