In seeing behind the scenes/trailers of the movie I knew it would be a little hokey, so I was not disappointed. It was not bad -groaning/eye rolling cheesy though. It stayed pretty true to the book. The only thing that really started bothering me was the extreme close ups in EVERY scene!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
