Just got back from watching "Looper." In short, this could also have been titled "Thinker." It avoids all the easy cliches of the standard time travel movie (though I admit, I like most of them). However, this one really stands out. I have no idea how it's done at the box office, as many great movies aren't box office smashes. However, this one will be remembered with Blade Runner (it's better) as one of the true greats of the science fiction genre. What it's really short on, which I appreciate, is manipulation. It grabs you because it speaks of things that are real. And the acting - solid all around, with (as usual) outstanding work by Emily Blunt. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a new guy, and he will be back. Bruce Willis, of course, knows how to be tough and sensitive. Oh yeah, Piper Perabo puts in a guest appearance also.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, thoughtful
This story tells young people the things they need to know. A great perspective on what is important. And of course, incredible production values. Highly recommended for all ages.
This movie capitalizes on excess, with more than moderate shock value. However, there is a real story to tell between the gags, and the tale is memorable and instructive as well as uproarious and gratuitous. I'm very glad I took the time to see it. Lots of fun....
Pitt proves again that he is versatile as an actor, and of course, Blanchett does not disappoint. The story is a parable - what would be the same - or different - if we aged in reverse? Suspending disbelief in response to a theme of this kind requires masterful acting and story-telling, and we get both here. The dilemmas teach us lessons about life that are not all obvious. When we age forwards, our end is by its nature uncertain. Not so aging backwards. Incapacity and dependency are certain; even the date of one's end is more or less predictable. Then what of sustaining love across the barriers of age? This story forces us beyond the older male/younger female stereotype - from both sides! A very memorable and beautifully crafted story.
A vehicle for the actors. Sheen and Langella are each brilliant in their roles. I thought Hopkins played Nixon well until seeing Langella. The micro eye movements and subtle gestures prove that nonverbal communication is most of communication. Langella inhabits Nixon, it is eerie. This move demonstrates that the communication of emotion is far more riveting than action, suspense or adventure. Watchable throughout - you won't be able to take your eyes off of the lead characters. And the recurring theme of transforming failure and misjudgement into success is dramatically illustrated. Langella is cruising for an Academy Award on this one!
Daniel Craig has done Bond his own way - very physical and athletic. More power to him, his approach is fresh and original. And come on, the acting is very professional - Judy Dench as M, for goodness sake! Mathieu Amalric surpasses as the bad guy - absolutely brilliant in the role. Olga Kurylenko is a sympathetic heroine. Is it a cartoon? Yes. But it's a worthy development of a time-honoured tradition.
The Imax version increases the immediacy and effectiveness of the movie - is a true science fiction story - about concepts, and there were enough of them in this film. Not everyone likes a movie that makes you think, but this one certainly does. Keanu Reeves was not emotionless, he just played emotion as an alien trying to operate within a human body. A tough role, and he surprised me by playing it so well! Jennifer Connelly continues to mature as an actress, and Jaden Smith appears to be on his way to a continued acting career, following in his father's footsteps. The female Secretary of Defense, a believable foil. I can't think of any aspect that wasn't well done. And, yes, I did see the original.
Baz Lurman got this one right. I am by no means a fan of all of his work, but this one fires on all cylinders. It is magnificent in scope in the tradition of the great westerns. The character development is well done, and aboriginal culture is treated sympathetically, with aboriginal characters playing central roles. On the scale of Dr. Zhivago or Gone with the Wind, but of course from a more contemporary perspective. Brandon Walters will be made by this film. A name to follow for years to come.
