I loved Rock of Ages, I laughed all the way through it, Cruise was great as the burned out rock star, and did an incredible job with the music. The "sex" scene with Cruise and the Rolling Stone writer was so funny! It's a musical, adapted from a Broadway play, and I just thought it was hilarious. Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand were very funny together, Paul Giamatti was appropriately slimey as the agent, and the 2 young leads were very talented singers. I'm surprised at the bad critical reviews this movie has received, everyone in my audience seemed to love it. Lots of laughing, even applause at a couple of points in the movie. If you hate musicals, you obviously won't like it, but I loved it.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great music
There were a few good special effects, but for the most part, this movie was just a waste of time. It's the type of movie that critics claim is "smart" although a better word would be "pretentious." It didn't even attempt to make any sense.
I love rom coms, and don't have very high expectations. It just needs to be cute and fun for me to like it. This movie was just not cute and really no fun. I love Josh Duhamel, I was a big Veronica Mars fan, so I like Kristen Bell, the supporting cast has some good comedic actors in it, it has the beauty of Rome, so all the elements of a good rom com are there, but somehow, it all went wrong. The storyline is supposed to be funny, but it's just painful.
