I need to quit reading books then seeing films.

I'd call this a solidly mediocre to good film. It wasn't poorly written, though it wasn't exactly well written either.
The special effects and makeup were more distracting than anything. The point of both are to make you suspend disbelief. The makeup was too heavily done and was unrealistic to the point it was distracting. It ended up making things unintentionally cheesy.
I loved the books. I was aware that the conversion to film form was going to lack, as so much of what made the books good was Bella's thinking. So much was lost in the conversion to film.
On the upside, the story is still fun. Anyone who's been a 17 year old awkward girl can relate to so many of the themes expressed.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
