moral of the movie is that friendships are more important than owning things and acquiring things. not a bad movie but I could not help but feeling that something was lacking in order to make it a great movie.
If the intent was to be interested in this Greenberg character, I was most certainly not. I could not wait for this boring, inane droll to end...and it did end, abruptly....to continue on. Maybe a skydiving accident should have been included in a re-write.
I guess horror is a difficult genre and this movie would prove that...it is not scary at all. All the usual story lines and camera angles for a horror movie were employed but not a tingle or a chill went up my spine.
The movie is set in affluent Santa Barbara and portrays the petty, trite life of a rich bore of a woman played by Streep. Typical formula script includes a precocious 7 year old and ultra sappy romantic scenes. I was counting the minutes to be released from this celluloid trash. Baldwin romps around shirtless; theaters should be required to provide barf bags. Lucky I did not have dinner.
I never got the feeling that Grant and Parker were a married couple in this movie. Hugh Grant by his droll nature can do deadpan humor, Jessica Parker cannot. I got a few laughs but the writers fell short in this comedy.
Message is that loneliness stinks and that family is everything. I think I've heard this tune before. Protagonist Clooney's job is to fire people who have lives, families and commitments...something he lacks and does not desire. Strangely, he prides himself on his consoling ability. His big life goal: to amass 10 million frequent flier miles. He gives lectures on how relationships are everything which is hypocritical to his lifestyle. Many of the movie's lines are delivered too quick, snappy and cocky and feels artificial. 2 1/2 stars.
premise: it is 1961 and a 16 year old London schoolgirl, mature for her age, falls for a suave possibly 35 ish older man who doggedly pursues her. her parents are stupidly charmed by the guy and let her date him and be taken on trips. schoolgirl is always in his car opening the glove box for a cigarette until, near the end of the movie, she discovers mucho letters in the glove box from his wife....the typical dumb philanderer pretentious slip up that deflates the movie going experience. this affair is her education and seals the decision to continue onto prestigious Oxford instead of getting married and be taken care of. a big waste of time in my humble opinion.
