As I waited in line, hundreds of adolescent girls waited for one of their most beloved novels to be translated to the big screen. After seeing the movie, I think I'll take the time to read the novels. Although campy at times (most noticeably during sequences of wirework running and jumping), the screenplay was written and acted out well enough to illicit an emotional connection to the main characters.
If you can get past the semi-emo demeanor of the main characters, the campy high school friends, and the low budget action sequences, there's a gem of a story and some good characters in this fun translation of a romantic fantasy novel. I suggest checking it out.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
