A cross between The Truman Show (a reality show taking place in a giant TV studio watched by millions) and Gladiator (with the Russell Crowe character played beautifully by Jennifer Lawrence). The star must kill fellow gladiators, many of whom are friends, for the amusement of the ruling class. However, the common masses fall in love with the underdog gladiator which creates problems with the ruling class's hold over the commoners. Perhaps this movie would have been better if Ridley Scott had been the director. Maybe he could have found a camera man with a more steady hand.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Could Have Been Better

Expected more from LUCASFILMS. I know Cuba Gooding Jr. was glad to be in this film, but he was once in a much better World War II movie called "Pearl Harbor". The story is good, but during the fighter dogfight sequences and the bomber cover fights, you are conscious that it is mostly a special effects effort. There is, however, one battle scene on the level of some of the scenes in "Saving Private Ryan". Two fighters make a strafing run on a German military train. You get the beautiful views from the pilots' vantage point as the approach to the train is made, and you also get a good look at the action from the perspective of the German soldiers on the train as the planes approach. Very realistic.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

When Steven Spielberg receives the Academy Award for Best Picture, the presenter should also give him the Regimental Pennant which was featured so prominently throughout the movie. I predict that this Regimental Pennant will become quite famous and someday be on display in the Smithsonian alongside Dorothy's ruby slippers.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

"Crazy Heart" was saved by the music. "The King's Speech" did not need saving. "The Help" became something very special when they unleashed the character, "Minny", played by Octavia Spencer. This movie didn't have anything special at all. The acting was OK. The pace was slow. The dialog was monotonous. The characters are not memorable. The movie tried to redeem itself during the last 10 or 15 minutes. But it was too late.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Emotional

Most movies give you all they have got and build emotions toward the end of the movie. This movie, like "Saviing Private Ryan", hits you with both barrels right off the bat. If you can make it through the first 20 or 30 minutes, you can make it through anything. A little bit of overacting by Aidan Quinn but otherwise, well done.
Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones set the standard for playing buddies in the 19th century American west (in a town called Lonesome Dove). Ed Harris (Duvall style) and Viggo Mortensen (Jones style) have almost matched that in a town called Appaloosa. Ed Harris should get an "A" for creating and making this masterpiece.
