Most Zhang Yimou movies that I've seen before take place in legendary ancient China, and are most memorable for their visual appeal. Not this one. This one takes place in war-torn 1937 China, and it's not pretty (for the most part. There are some appealing shots in a church interior.) This movie is an extremely powerful depiction of the horrors of war. Not for children.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie began with a text on the screen saying that it was inspired by true events. I have already started to research these events (Google sanctum true story). Photography and visual effects were excellent, the story a bit contrived - compare with the true story, which I shall continue to research. Nevertheless, it will have you on edge, especially near the end. Moral questions were raised.
