I've watched professional reviewers diss this movie - and I think they're just trying to appear smart by being critical rather than being a fan boy or fan girl.
It's a good film - it's done like a classic in that you don't see a ton of gore, yet it is still scary.
Anthony Hopkins and the gent who plays the seminarian are both excellent.
Hopkins said it was a good script and I agree with him! The story was adapted to film for dramatic impact with a secular audience and it was done artfully.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie is great - but it does have a genre attached to it. What I mean is that it isn't an action movie, so if that's what you are looking for, this movie is not for you. This film has a lot of whimsy, is very fairy-tale, and has beautiful colors that make it like a painting. Depp is developing a bit of a character for himself like Clint Eastwood has in Hollywood because you can see some Jack Sparrow in his acting of this character. My husband expected more originality, like "I wasn't coming to see Pirates 4" - but I was okay with it.
It was okay if politics and government are your interest. There were some zingers that made me laugh, and the facial expressions could also be quite funny. I agree with the other reviewers that there was a little too much dialogue and it felt unfinished. The subject was timely but the film was a little mediocre. The cast, overall, was pretty good though. It is no classic or award-winner- put it that way.
