If you're looking for a complex, mind-bending movie with deep meaning and earth shattering plot twists... Go see something else. This movie is a beautiful throwback to the popcorn-munching action flicks of the 1980's. The plot is straightforward (Not to be confused with weak), and it's all about the action. Not Gorey blood fest hyper-realistic, but true knock 'em out, shoot it up, blow it up action. I've already told everyone I know about this movie, and we will be seeing it again. Why? Because explosions make me smile.
This movie is by far one of the best I've seen in a long time. The storyline was not only complex but interesting, as were all of the characters. It was everything I could possibly expect from a comic like Watchmen (Which I had not read, but was extremely familiar with), and possibly more. Book movies aren't supposed to be this good. However, it's origin as a comic can be seen in it's pacing and organization; something a little too complex for the average joe or movie critic to understand; I expect to hear a lot of "I didn't get it." and low scores because of that wonderful fact. If you've ever read just about any half-decent comic long-term, then go for it, you couldn't possibly be disappointed.
Well, normally I leave a movie with SOME sort of emotion: Happiness, Anger, 'D*mn, I've been ripped off'... something. 'Max Payne' however, I left with a distinct lack of feeling. This movie was too good to be called bad, but too bad to be called good. It was mediocre telling of what may or may not be a good storyline, with tolerable character development, and a mixture of Incredible Imagery and visuals with very limited meaning and occasionally hokey execution. Overall, I'd have to give a heavy nod of thanks to the DP for the noir feel of the film that falls in an odd place between 'Sin City' and 'Lord of War', and a big 'why?' to the writers. Good enough to not be a waste of time, but not enough to pay for. Make this movie a Rental.
