You of course have to let the New Testament vs Old Testament theme go, and you obviously can't compare Russell Crowe with the Javert of the London or Broadway casts . . . But other than that — magnificent!
Fantine's "I Dreamed a Dream" was crushingly moving and one of the most powerfully emotional moments I have ever experienced in a film. Eponine's death in Marius's arms nearly pushed me over the top. Marius's "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables" left me breathless and dizzy. And I was altogether choked up and nearly in tears (ok, actually in tears) in the final scene with Cosette and Valjean as he dies.
Hugh Jackman played an absolutely incredible Valjean. (London's Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, actually played the priest, which I thought was cool.) Marius was awesome. Both Cossettes were perfection. Eponine couldn't have been better. The Thenardiers (Helena Bonham Carter plays Madame Thenardier!) were fantastic (and hilarious). Gavroche was great.
People all through the the theater were crying throughout the film. You just don't run into that. I don't know when a movie last affected me so strongly. And I already knew what to expect! I've seen that musical more than half a dozen times. It's never been that powerful. Never.
This was absolutely extraordinary. I plan to see it at least once more while it’s in the theater, and I’ll owe it the day it comes out on DVD.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, stunning musical
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not only an excellent film in every respect, but also a powerful representation of the Oxfordian position. While one plot twist near the end is rather questionable, and while one plot device throughout serves only to strengthen the movie as such, the case for Oxford is hit upon beautifully on dozens and dozens of points, both subtle and pronounced. The intro and outro by Derek Jacobi, giving us a film-within-a-play is a grand device. And Oxford ... is sublime.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Totally amazing, and absolutely worth the ticket price. All of the best songs, spread out over several huge concerts, with a few interludes here and there where Kenny talks over other footage and photos. Really shows you what this guy is like, and you can't help seeing how great (and down to earth) he is. Best evening out I've had in ages. Might even go see it again!
Let me start by saying simply this: About time. What a refreshing blast of clean air to drive out the stagnant, pent-up, primitive stink festering in the churches and temples and mosques of the world. What Maher inspires most of all — what he is trying to inspire most of all — is a healthy sense of DOUBT. It would be too much to expect them to try laying out all the refutations of "God" (any god, of any religion) so as to take an expressly atheistic position. But I count it enough that he at least ridicules "God" (any god, of any religion) and encourages the audience to very seriously doubt the hocus-pocus, fairy-tale nonsense and anti-rational mental derangement inherent in taking religion (any religion) seriously.
