I had read the book with great interest some time ago and was amazed that anyone would try to film that story. Technically, this film was terrific: the most beautiful images of sun and water that I have ever seen, and very realistic-looking animals, as well as good acting. I spent a lot of time simply wondering at the spectacle offered by the director. Visually this film has no real rival, and it takes 3D to a stage beyond Avatar. However, the script does remove a bit of the subtlety of the book and belabors the final point rather than allowing the viewers to figure it out themselves. A twist that you come to understand without having it spelled out for you is all the more powerful. But even with that caveat it is a remarkable experience.
