"Up" is the first movie in a long time that I can truly recommend to anyone. It is touching, funny, sad, heartwarming, sweet, and ultimately very fun. It takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride even on multiple viewings. I will say to bring a package of tissues (or at least go get some napkins from the concession stand), because this movie will have you in tears within 10 minutes. "Up" is, in my humble opinion, the best movie that Pixar has put forth in its brief history, and if any movie this year can be better, 2009 will most certainly be a great year at the movies.
Forget history. Michael Mann took so many liberties with characters and the actual order of events that it makes me (or anyone else who read the amazing book) nauseous. But when you put all of that aside, it is a thrilling romp of a movie that is stylish and suave. Great performances by Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard. I wish they would have shown more of Billy Crudup as J. Edgar Hoover; he was such an integral part of the story and the movie made him out to be almost a non-factor.
All in all, this is good summer entertainment. Denzel Washington is pitch-perfect as usual, but John Travolta seems out of place and frankly the wrong casting decision. He seems more in his element with musicals or family comedies. The movie had a good plot, but the F-word was massively overused. Travolta literally incorporated it twice into every sentence. By the end of the movie, quite frankly it become comical.
Really more of a 3 1/2 star movie...they drastically altered the book, completely changing the ending and several other parts too. I would probably be more adamantly opposed to this but I only vaguely recall the book from when I read it 4 years ago.
A little bit confusing at times though...it is hard to follow in the middle as Tom Hanks jumps frantically to conclusions.
Overall, enjoyable, but a bit too baffling at parts to be great. I would recommend "Duplicity" if you are looking for a complex thriller that really delivers.
I thought that "I Love You, Man" was a great comedy, but it did succeed on a thought-provoking level too (although I am not sure that it was trying to). The man-friendship between the two main characters can be seen, if looked at carefully, just as if it were a relationship. And really, I thought that a subtle message of the movie was that every relationship between the same gender are extremely G-word (it won't let me write what I want to say) if you think about it enough.
But overall, a hilarious comedy. Not many quotable lines, but some good laughs still.
I thought that this movie was excellent, and having read the book, it stayed very close to the original plotline. Excellent acting by DiCaprio and Winslet, who were both snubbed by the Oscars. And Michael Shannon is dynamite. All in all, it was an superb movie, but beware...it is very heavy, and expect some depression in the days after seeing it.
I saw this movie the first weekend it came out, and I loved it. But there were basically no people in the theater. I went back to see it yesterday, and my theater was almost completely full. I am proud to say that I discovered this movie before everyone else who is jumping on the bandwagon as it trucks through awards season.
